Usng FC4. I have a dlink router the network says it on I can access the internet thus I'm writing this question.
In my book toaccess the network it says go to places type in the name of the system you which to reach and the shared folders should show.
This doesn't seem to work. In FC4 I checked to see if the router's ip ad been picked up and it has, but it won't see my xp system.
any ideas?
thanks

try to mount it manually first. I can tell you that in FC4, I only mounted other drives on windows after I had set up Samba. (not that this is mandatory, just the way I did it)
On FC5 I can use the places to mount, although I run a small file server for my home network, so I also have Samba running so I don't know if that helps the places mount or not.
What happen when you issue from terminal command like this after using su to become root?
Make mountpoint: mkdir /mnt/share
Issue mount command from terminal: mount -t cifs -o ro,user=jeff //192.168.0.100/sharename /mnt/share
Insert your username on the win xp box in place of jeff, the ip address of the win xp box instead of the one I used and the name of the Win xp share in place of share name. See if that works.

I'm having a similar problem. I have a 4 computer peer-to-peer network; 3 XP machines and 1 FC5. I want to be able to browse shared folders on all machines the same way I would if I was only using XP. I'm a total Linux noob and am pretty clueless about how to accomplish.
Thanks

Bill,
I used a mixed network without a hitch. As you are new, try installing smb4k and using it. BUT, you need samba running on your fc5 box first. Assign the same workgroup name as on your xp network and assign a netbios name in your samba configuration.
Then install smb4k after samba is up. "yum install smb4k". This will give you a "network neighborhood" type of viewing platform to browse your xp shares and samba will allow your xp boxes to see the fc5 box by opening your network neighborhood in xp.

Thanks Jeff,
I do believe Samba is up and running. Would I go to System/Servers/Samba Server to set the workgroup name? Is that also where I set the Netbios name? FC5 offers a pretty slick GUI to set up a Samba share and I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Also, is smb4k on the install CD's? I don't have a high speed connection at home (yet)?
Thanks!
Bill
