You should at least provide us with the following information:

What kind of connection do you want to establish (adsl/cable/..)?
Does your network connects via dhcp or does it use static ip ?
Is your network device detected ?

Normal gui way to set up a connection like this is:

system -> administration -> network
at device section choose: New -> xDSL
Give all the information it asks
After finishing, choose to edit your connection if you want to start the connection upon boot.

If the above is not working, try to explain what is not working, and if possible attach some log entries.

So when you ask the network gui to restart eth0, it will not?

if i am understanding what you mean i think you are right. even if i tell it to activate it says it does but i can get it to work.

But it indicates that it is active? If it is listed as active and you restart it and it still doesn't work, post the output of these files.

cat /etc/hosts
cat /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig
