If you were using a router I would comment more, but I have never run ADSL. Does it perform like a router and issue dhcp address or by putting router in parenthesis, do you have one to hook up? Router would provide more firewall support for Windoze pcs in my opinion.
I do file sharing on a common network with Windows pc, 1 fc3 and 1 fc5 which also does limited file serving to the others.

Please follow these two threads. I did twice now and it works like a champ on both FC3 and FC5 although slight modifications to set for FC5 (Maybe it has been updated).

Use the first one and the second is for any further references.

Is the ADSL modem a modem router or more like a USB modem?
If it's not a modem router you'll have to attach it to one of the computers and use IP forwarding

Thanx 4 ur opinion I really apreciate it, but I think it shall be not good to let the windows control the network and control the Linux Systems. I would like to make one of my Linux System the Server, but what do I have to do to do that ? what type of services or Servers do I have to run on it ?
This may be a brief of my request.

You didn't read the post very well. my FC5 is my fileserver and it also acts as my WINS server. My system works just fine, thank you.

If it's an Alcatel speedtouch it's just a modem and not a router.
You will need to configure the Linux machine to connect to the internet with the SpeedTouch, thats step one. Step two is then to turn on IP forwarding and then on all other machines set the default gateway IP to be the IP of the linux machine.

Yes my dear it is Alcatel
Now I have connected my PC to a switch on eth0, and connected my ADSL modem to the same switch, and have made a connection to the net through this connection settings. What do I have to do now ? Do I have to connect the other PC's to eth1 ? and how can I do the IP forwarding ? or Do you mean another way ?
Thank you for all of your support

What I would do is see if I had an older computer sitting around. If I did, I would turn it into a router by installing IPCop, which is a special distribution of Linux which is available free just for this sort of thing. It is very easy to install, and will run on basically any computer from the past several years.

Here is an example home network:

Hi,
What type of Speettouch do you have?
My dad has one and it is firewall. dhcp server in one (can be checked if you go to http://www.pcflank.com/scanner1.htm), you should see no ports at all open and not the ones found with "nmap <if got from dhcp>" example: nmap 10.0.0.150
If all above is true, then you connect the modem to the switch and the other computers also and all comouters can use the internet.
If the modem is in brideged modem (as demon does) try to set the modem in router mode.

Hilbert

Thanx man for your help,
I found today that it is a Router Modem, and I configured it to be the DHCP server and made an Always on Connection too. Now my Windows PC's are able to connect to the net (using it now) but my Linux PC's are not !!! :( What is the configuration I need to do so that I can make the Linux PC's use the same Internet Connection (The Router 10.0.0.138) ???
Plz I really need help.

FIRST OF ALL STOP POSTING IN THAT LARGE FONT!!!!
Make sure you have you get your info from the DHCP server, I saw you are a sysadmin so that should be that mutch of a problem: System->Administration->Network
double click on eth0 and make sure you use dhcp.

Mr Hilbert,
I think font size are my own desicion to use and not yours my friend. And they are here for us to use, dont be sad from me but this is the truth. And by the way if have really read my thread very well you will notice that I asked for a opinion in the first place and not a solution. Anyway I found the solution and I shall put it in the next thread for all to use as a reference to such a problem.

The solution to this case is:
1) I used my ADSL modem which came to be actually a Router, and made it set up the network by using it as a DHCP Server. to do that login to your Alcatel SpeedTouch Router through the following Address http://10.0.0.138 then goto Advanced -> Easy Setup -> follow the Wizard and click finish. now you have your connection established and your network up and running the DHCP Server.
2) Goto each Machine Linux or Windows and let it use an IP Address given by the DHCP. You can do this for the linux machines by edititng the
vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and entering the following code:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
HWADDR=YourHWAddress (MAC Address)
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet
DHCP_HOSTNAME=YourHostName
Then run the following command to restart the network and use the new settings:
service network restart
For Windows Machine is for you to do because its a peice of cake :D
Now Enjoy your network and the NET ;)
Best Regards to All
