I have set up a home network with wireless technology. im using a wireless router (obviously) on windows xp, and am installing FC5 on my new box (AMD AthlonXP-M 2800+). i need to know the configuration i need to do for this. No live cd distro (slax, knoppix) seems to find it and it wont auto-detect. im guessing i have no connection.
My adapter is a WUSB11 v4. i have searched the net for what to do, and no joy. seems like i need to configure it with ndiswrapper but i havent a clue how to use!! PLEASE HELP!!
i have tried following WUSB11 v2.6 and 2.8 instructions but nothing for mine. i know it is supported having read the HCL for ndiswrapper. i have put the files on too.
If it helps, though it seems worse card, i have a WUSB54GS v2 card. seems like the HCL says it needs more work that i dont understand to get working.
I ask for help since google turns up WUSB11 v2.6 linksys adapters and the config for that, mine is WUSB54GS-UK or WUSB11 v4.

Ndiswrapper is what you need for that model card. Lots of info on installing and using it here.

man its being a real pain. i installed FC5 and have downloaded ndiswrapper. i follow instructions and i get an error refering to the kernal!! i have no idea on wireless networks and linux. i had done a ton of homework prior to buying my device. for clarification (due to google search my card has more than one ver) i have WUSB54GS V.2. i do also have a wireless b card WUSB11 and i have seen posts on this forum but i cant download the CVS tarball to even try the stuff. oh and i also had trouble when i wanted to see the device by typing: "/sbin/lsusb" this is meant to show me stuff and it says filename or path unknown. also tried without /sbin with no luck. i know i am prob doing something wrong but i dont know what. any help please??

right. i get these messages:
from root:
#/sbin/lsusb
bash: /sbin/lsusb: No such file or directory
#lsusb
bash: lsusb: No such file or directory
#cd /sbin
#dir
at this point i see no lsusb. closest match is usb_id...to investigate it i ran it
#/sbin/usb_id
No device specified
hmm...i think i should install ndiswrapper. but then these problems:
#<ndiswrapper-1.16 directory>
#make
make -C driver
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/adam_laura/ndiswrapper-1.16/driver'
Can't find kernel build files in /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5/build;
give the path to kernel build directory with
KBUILD=<path> arguement to make
make[1]: *** [prereq_check] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/adam_laura/ndiswrapper-1.16/driver'
make: *** [all] Error 2
#
arghh. i checked the readme and install mans and they say need kernel 2.6.6 or higher. for pruposes of clarification, FC5 build is 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5
I am trying to get something to work, i have two adapters i can try (due to having a wireless-g router on winxp, i can have either), both linksys, one is wireless-g WUSB54GS-UK v2, the other is wireless-b WUSB11 v4. i know these should work (def WUSB11 v4) and all i need is ndiswrapper to work, but i cant firgure these errors. i have good enough kernel and system, as well as pre-reqs. i did try to make a link to the kernel build files following a google, but it didnt work, just made an unknown file in the kernel directory. Please Help Me!! Someone!!

Yeah finding the right info can be a pain. Even after 8 years in Linux I still have a few bugs now and then. Many can be fixed by editing code and recompiling but finding some of that info is difficult to say the least. Some of the best help can be found from the developers themselves. As far as lsusb it may depend on the install you choose. I can't remeber which package contains the lsusb command. I will later on tonight do a search of my rpm database and post the rpm it is in. Then you can see if you have it or if it is on the CD.

that be great if u can. i dunno why it isnt on my system.
i have added lines to my /etc/init.d/network file to load the wireless configuration everytime i boot. prob an easier way but it worked for me. simple bash script added to start of file and it does it no problems. am actually on wireless now. if anyone was curious as to the exact way, or if you think it wise i put how it was done, i can do so.
it took some workaround but i got there!! just most of what i read told me to use lsusb. you can use iwconfig and ndiswrapper -l to see if modules are installed correctly and if device is being seen by iwconfig. works fine!!

The rpm is usbutils*.rpm. To see if you have installed do a ' rpm -qa | grep usbutils '. That would be the easiest way to get wireless up.

it is in the core repo for those interested. works a charm and even see my wireless-g adapter (since i got wireless-b up i didnt bother)
i am working on wioreless -g, and the above wikis were very helpful and i shall post abck when wirelss-g works too. THis way should anyone have same trouble with FC5 and any of the two adapters i have mentioned in this article then they can have the answers to their problems.
next time i guess RTFM for me!!
