My setup:
dual-boot emachines T6532 PC
Windows XP Media Center Edition
AMD Athlon 64
nVidia GeForce 6100
SpeedStream DSL modem
2.615-1.2054_FC5 x86_64

I've finally gotten DSL on my PC. It's working fine in Windows, but not at all in Linux

Boot up messages proceed as usual until:

Bringing up interface eth0:

(After about two minutes, the following completes)
Determining IP information for etho: FAILED

You seems to have configured your NIC with DHCP, but if you use a modem (instead of a router) I don't think this will work.
Did you install some program that your ISP gave to you for Windows?

Sometimes, you need only unplug the router from the Computer. If that doesn't work, reboot the windows section. Start>Control Panel > Networking and under one of the tabs for your connection [properties] look for the way your connection is set up. It will show you the address, gateway, DNS servers, your mac address and a few other things. Write all this down and when you boot back into the FC OS, you can enter all this info under System>Administration>Network. That is if you do not get assigned a new addy when you re-boot, but it should work.

perhaps you want to try the command as root:
adsl-setup
may help a bit

No consensus, obviously ... On bootup, the delay seems to be gone, but the IP address still can't be determined. First ? : I haven't done any network-related installation or configuration in Linux yet. To answer another ?, the modem is connected to the PC with an etnernet cable. I tried System-Configure-Network, but couldn't even get started because of the problem described above. I'll give System-Administration_Network a try, but am not confident. I've never been able to get FC5 to work with the nVidia board flawlessly ...

It's been more than a year now, and I hardly ever boot into Linux. I've been thinking of trying Ubuntu, because I've read that setting up DSL may be automatic.

I can get an IP address (which changes when my computer is powered on), a subnet mask, and a default gateway. In Fedora, I've gone into System-Administration-Network, but can't find a place to enter this information. The eth0 error is mentioned, but I also see that the ethernet card is OK>

If you're still on FC5 , perhaps you should get a copy of Fedora 8 and install it. Or maybe just download the "Live" version, and see if it works for you.
Lots of good changes since a year ago.
