Hello all. I just started messing around with Linux so you probibly have to bear with me. If you don't want to spend any time talking me though this I understand. If you can help me... well thank you in advance.

I have a rebuilt HP Pavilion 533w that I swaped out the motherboard to about a year ago. It's specs are:

900 mhz AMD
512 MB RAM
15 Gig HD
40 Gig HD
Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX [Linksys EtherFast 10/100]
ATI RAGE 128 RF/SG AGP

Anyway, I was using the computer as a fileserver but decided to nix XP and switch over to Fedora. The problem is I haven't been able to network with my Dell Laptop (using XP) or even connect to the internet. I haven't even been able to install Samba. I use a SB 5101 Motorolla cable modem to connect to the net.

Here are my problems so far:

I installed Fedora 6 on my fileserver with no problems from the ISO files that I burned to CD. I tried running my cable modem directly to the fileserver after install to connect to the internet... and install the latest version of samba. Automatic detection of the IP and relevent info failed. I also could not get the device to activate under the networking option. I got my IP info from my laptop to confure everything:

IP 24.207.237.235
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 24.207.236.1
Provider mo.charter.com

I entered this information into my fileserver and activated the device. Still, I wasen't able to connect to the internet. I reset the settings and went into the command prompt and typed ifconfig to make sure everything was right. For whatever reason it gave me this:

inet addr 127.0.0.1
Mask 255.0.0.0

Well, since I coulden't get the internet installed correctly I decided to see if I could network my PC and fileserver to transfer any files over. Here is my setup:

PC connects to router. Fileserver connects to router. Router connects to cable modem.

I'm using a DYNEX EHB4 10mbs router that DOES have the needed port for the cable modem.

The Linux PC was set to IP 10.2.2.2 and the Windows is set to 10.2.2.1. The subnet was set to 255.255.255.0 on each. I just wanted to see if the computers would be able to communicate in case Samba came on it. Well, once I got done doing my stuff with windows I was able to see my XP machine. I wasen't able to access it beyond the computer level, however so I'm assuming Samba IS NOT installed. I wasen't even able to see that my fileserver existed from my XP machine. Samba did not show up on any of the background files running when I checked either so I probibly need to install it.

The thing is the precompiled binaries woulden't install when I downloaded them. And when I open the Add/Remove packet manager it won't load because I'm not connected to the internet. I tried to follow the instructions to compiling Samba on my own but wasen't able to get it beyond some of the basic setups... even when it was installed.

So that's my deal. I'm stuck.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I've done what I can for now but don't know where to go. Thank you so much!
