I have fedora 7 installed in an UPC romanian cable net. I have no antivirus and the firewall settings for fedora are disabled. It is OK ? Can I be in danger ? I also have win XP n the computer. When on the net in Linux, could somebody affect my win partition ?
Maybe it sound like a stupid question, but if I new the answer I would not ask !
Thank you !

have fedora 7 installed in an UPC romanian cable net. I have no antivirus and the firewall settings for fedora are disabled. It is OK ? Can I be in danger ?as a general rule i always have iptables (the firewall) running on any of my boxes whether or not they are directly connected to the internet or if they are behind a router. if your behind a router it poses much less of a threat than a direct connection but i would say to definitely run the firewall either way.
I also have win XP n the computer. When on the net in Linux, could somebody affect my win partition ? technically yes, but the chances of this are so minuscule that i would not even worry about it. first you would have to find someone with the know-how but on top of that they would have to really want something off that partition but they would not be able to do it without first compromising the linux side (which goes back to the previous answer).
hope that helps,
joseph

the easiest way to configure the firewall in fedora is to use system-config-securitylevel (as root). in kde you can also start it by click on the 'k' menu-->administration-->firewall and selinux. i have no idea how to start it from gnome (but entering the system-config-securitylevel command as root from a terminal will work no matter what window manager you are using)
