fetchmail question

i setup fetchmail and start it from my .bash_profile with "fetchmail -d 180" to check the mail every 3 minutes. Is that an acceptable method? or is there some better way to run fetchmail every few minutes?

Yes, that's the usual way, or was when I used fetchmail. (These days, I much prefer getmail (http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/getmail.html) and there's now an rpm for it.)
