How to install WG111v3 USB WLAN device

Hi

I am new to this forum. I am running on fedora core 6 and trying to get Netgear USB wireless LAN working (WG111v3) on fedora. Have there been any previous posts on this topic or does any one have experience dealing with this installation? I found several posts on the ubuntu forums. Is it similar?

Any clues on this one? Can NetworkManager or other components be used successfully to enable USB WLAN?

Welcome to the forum :)

We need to know what chipset your card is using, can you post the output of the lspci command, you can see from my output I have a Ralink chipset, Once we find out which chipset you have then we can offer some advice.

$ lspci

I browsed some of the previous threads and was looking into it yesterday. This is a USB device so I guess I should be running /sbin/lsusb and not /sbin/lspci. Is this correct?

In any case, when I run lsusb, I get output that this is a NetGear chipset WG111v3. (I can post the precise version shortly). However, I was also reading on other forums such as linuxquestions that this was a RealTek chipset. Does that help?

ah, usb, that's me not reading your post correctly, from the information you have provided and a quick google, sounds like you need NDISwrapper, it will be helpful to get the output of lsusb then read

and see what it suggests for your specific card.

Thanks for the fantastic links. I have completed most of the steps in the ndis-yum-livna link. I will however step through the instructions as a confirmation.

One thing I noticed is that NetworkManager does nothing in my case i.e. all I see is one option "Enable Network Manager" and that is it. Any idea if it did not install correctly or if I need other libraries / modules?

I am running Fedora 8, so NetworkManager came installed, I just needed to turn it on.

Prehaps some other people in the forum know how to get NetworkManager working on Fedora 6, anyone?

Actually I upgraded to fedora 8 over the weekend. It has been good so far. The behavior I had described earlier was with fedora 8. Except "About" and "Enable Network Manager" which are visible with right-click on system tray, all other options are disabled.

Thanks for your help so far. I installed ndiswrapper 1.48 and configured it to use wg111v3.inf found on other sites. Now when I insert the USB device, it becomes active (mini hurray) but after a while the machine freezes on me. I am on kernel version 2.6.23.xxx

What would you recommend? If I have the USB inserted on startup, it freezes at "Probing for new hardware". Does this give any clues?

Just today I bought a WG111V3 for a newly-built system that has no free PCI slots. I installed ndiswrapper 1.52 and installed the Netgear driver for the wg111v3. It also becomes active, but when I attempt to use iwconfig to set the WEP key, it freezes. I suspect this is probably due to insufficient kernel stack size, but I can't be sure until I have done a kernel recompile.

Can you post the output of /sbin/lsusb that will let us see what chipset you have and the output of sudo lspci -vvxxx just paste the WG111v3 info as it gives you lots of technical detail on how the device is setup.

It is a Realtek Chipset. RTL8187B
