F8 no internet with new cable modem, XP no probs [SOLVED]

No probs with previous (woosh) modem (apart from the slow connection). This modem is a motorola sb5101. No internet with either F8 or Mepis live disks either. Tried system>network>edit etc... tried via usb and ethernet connection. Doesn't get a DHCP on startup...

Where is the problem here? is it the modem? everything is nice and simple with XP (different machine tho) and working fine with F* and Mepis before trying cable???

Any advice??

maybe you need to connect with ppoe?
I don't so I don't know anything about it or setting it up.

To make itaeasy, use a router with a WAN port. Then all the configuration is in the router and the your LAN is all up to you. Personally I like to use staic addresses localy.
