Hi all,

I'm posting from a FC8 laptop using a LAN connection here...

It seems that the Intel 3945ABG driver installed perfectly during installation of the OS... but I can't seem to activate the wlan0 interface :(

Can someone help me configure this? Thanks!

Bringing up interface wlan0: Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :

Go to system services and start networkmanager. Make sure it's checked to start at boot.

Hi Glennzo,

Sorry for asking the question then not returning to see it....

I did enable the netmanager to start on boot but didn't wrk.....

However, I did click the icon at the upper right korner of the screen and it shows me a list of SSIDs... I was able to get online this way.... just that during boot, wlan0 still won't work... it would try to obtain an IP through DHCP then fails... as it gets into the runlevel5... asking for the lock code, it would work... That's fine by me... just the boot process will delay about 10 seconds for wlan0 to timeout.

Thanks for your help!

You can tell it not to try to get an IP at boot time. That's how I have mine set. Many people see it as a nuisance. Once I get to the desktop I'm usually connected in seconds. Select System > Administration > Network. Select wlan0 and click edit. In the new window uncheck Activate device when computer starts. See attachment.

Hi Glennzo,

That did the trick... after signing in, it asks for the keyring password and automatically plugs into the SSID.

Thank you sir!

Hi,

I have an Intel 3945 wireless card on a HP NX3420 notebook. Until yesterday I used F8 kernel version 6.23.1 but because I wanted to install the ATI video driver, I had to upgrade my kernel to 6.23.14 which broke my ipw3945 driver.
I tried to recompile it( as mentioned [url=http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php/Main_Page#Method_2]here[\url] ) but it did not work. The wireless card is no longer recognized.
However, the ATI driver seems to work even when using the 6.23.1 kernel( I was able to set a 1400x900 resolution and open the ATI Control Center ). This is weird!

There is a possible fix to try for an Intel3945 using the fedora kernel and driver module here:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F8Common#head-a4b01d2dd0b0137a2661eb978771f20749ce3854

I don't actually have to use it on mine but it would be interesting to know if it works for you:

It's determining IP and fails. I'd say that you're possibly entering the wrong security key or trying to use the wrong security type, wpa wpa-psk, wep, etc. Do you actually know the correct security key? What type of encryption are you using? How about the name of your wireless network? Is it hidden. If it's hidden un-hide it. Won't work well if it's hidden. Not trying to sound like I'm jumping down your throat here. Just trying to add some useful input. IPW3945 works flawlessly on my laptop with no hoop jumping on my part. I use NetworkManager and WEP. I've also installed and used WICD. That works well too.

Hello myusuf3

There are two ways of connecting to a wireless network in Fedora. One involves using the NetworkManager software on the top Gnome panel to the right. The other involves using the Network Configuration software from the System - Administration menu.

If you use on, you must not use the other as they can conflict with each other.

If you are using WPA encryption it is much easier to use NetworkManager as WPA the other way is difficult.

If you are to use NetworkManager you must make sure that the other method is not interfering.

Try going into System menu - Administration - Network, hopefully there is an entry there for your wireless card, probably identified as wlan0. Highlight it and click "Edit" and make sure that the card is not set to "activate when the computer starts" and that if the option is there that "Controll by NetworkManager" is marked.

Probably best to restart the machine at this stage.

See what NetworkManager can do for you then.

Also post back the results of the commands:

iwconfig

and

iwlist wlan0 scan

Both of those commands need to be run with root privileges so:

su -

is the command to get those. Note that is a space and a minus sign after the su.

I am a new to this forum. First I want to thank the contributors of this forum. I had two problems: 1. My vista was gone after installing fedora. 2. wirless is not working. I fixed the issue #1 following the suggestion described in the archived(installation) of this forume. But I still has the problem #2. I followed all of the suggestions you guys have provided in this thread. Still no luck. Please help me to resolve the issue.
Notebook:Gateway MT6841 with intel 3945ABG wirless driver(I confirmed from windows driver as well as manufcaturer's website)

[root@localhost ~]# uname -r
2.6.24

[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep 3945
iwl3945 165992 0
mac80211 119564 1 iwl3945

[root@localhost ~]# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

[root@localhost ~]# ifup wlan0
iwl3945 device wlan0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

In network configuration I unchecked "Activate device when computer starts". Both of the services: Network Manager and Network Manager dispatcher are active. In the top right corner I can only see "wired network connected" but no wireless.

Can you please suggest me anything I can do to resolve this issue? Your help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ocena Manob

Hello ocenamanob

Just seen your second post, did you install from the DVD or the live cd?

If it was the latter, could you boot from it again and see if you get the same problem prior to installing.

You may or may not have a problem with connecting to an access point, but the output from iwconfig is very surprising.

Is there a chance you could get hold of a copy of the live cd if you installed from DVD and see if it is the same with that?

You say in your previous post:

In network configuration I unchecked "Activate device when computer starts".

Does that mean there was/is an entry that referred specifically to your wireless card?

Hi bbfuller.

I am not sure if it was live cd or dvd. I guess it was live cd. I don't have that with me right now. I basically installed last saturady. I can only have that the coming saturday from my instructor.
Regarding the second question: you and glennzo both suggested to do so for other persons. There fore I thought it may help if I uncheck that. I tried even check that one doesn't help either.

Yes, but when you say that you did:

In network configuration I unchecked "Activate device when computer starts".

was there an entry for your wireless card, and is it there now?

There are two entries NM always:
V->Active->eth0->eth0->Ethernet
V->Inactive->wlan0->wlan0->Wireless

Hope this answers your question

Hello ocenamanob

I'm not sure where you go from here, all the signs say that iwconfig should show output from your card and that NetworkManager should manage it and allow you to connect.

All the signs except one that is. In your first post you show:

[root@localhost ~]# uname -r
2.6.24

I have an up to date Fedora 8 installation and mine shows:

[root@atx17 ~]# uname -r
2.6.23.15-137.fc8

That means that you have a non-standard kernel in there from somewhere, where did you get it from?

If your Fedora 8 installation is at all standard you will have the previous kernel that you installed available from your boot menu. Can I suggest that you try booting from that and pasting the result od 'uname -r' again and trying iwconfig.

I received the CD(not live cd) from another person. I think I had fedora 6 earlier I tried that one two. Wireless is not working in 2.6.22.14-72.fc6.

Hello ocenamanob

Fedora changes frequently, I managed to get my 3945 working with Fedora 7, I didn't have it to try with on Fedora 6.

I can tell you though that to get a 3945 working on Fedora 7 was quite a lot of trouble as the drivers we now take for granted (iwl3945) didn't work and we all had to replace them with the ipw3945 drivers from various third party repositories.

I'm not sure quite what has happened to this install of Fedora 8 that you have. What I can say is that it is non-standard and with a non-standard kernel that you haven't compiled yourself I doubt you will find anyone other than the originator of the disk who can tell you why it doesn't work.

If you've got a decent broadband connection there I suggest that you download one of the Fedora live cd's and try that. I think it will convince you just how readily the 3945 works with 8 and won't disturb the installation you have in place if you need to keep it.

Hi bbfuller,

I am little confused to since I am a newbie. I will consult with my instructor and also verify wireless works in vista. I will update you if I find anything new. Once again thanks a lot for all your prompt replies.

Hi bbfuller,

I installed fedora8(kernel2.6.23.1-42) from DVD. Then I followed your advice and my wireless network is connected right way. One issue I faced like others ..... too slow fedora8 startup when it started the service: sendmail. There are already some threads in this forum. Then I follwed the advice from Iron Mike disable some of the services during startup (http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-services-f8.html). Now the slow startup problem is gone. Now it is running without any problem. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi!
I have written a thourough tutorial on how to quickly setup a wireless iwl3945 connection in Fedora 8 in my blog: http://my.opera.com/avoulk/blog/show.dml/1728039

Check it out, it should be working (it is already twice tested)
