Unable to connect pc to pc.

Hi ,i am facing two problem at this time in my FC6.ok I have two pc nd have crossover cable.but unable to connect for this problem .can u help me?
1st problem is "i dont know that how to put ip in FC6.
2nd problem is that i want to connect FC6(1st pc)nd Windows 2003(2nd Pc) through samba.

man ifconfig will show you how to bind an ip addr to the ethernet card

i tried from this command "neat" nd put ip nd subnet but then i m trying to restart from this command
"/sbin/service network restart" but getting error msg is:-"Bringing up interface eth1: 3c501 device eth1 does not seem to be present ,delaying initialization.".please guys help me with seriously.
