Is there anything special I need do to get this to work ? I've checked that I've opened the correct stuff on the firewall, but I can never connect from my win machines to my fedora core machine.
Are the two even compatible ? I notice that FC2 requires you to specify a desktop for vnc, where as win just connects to any other win server.

be sure to add the number of the display to the ip address.
e.g. 192.168.0.100:1 if vncserver says that it started on display :1

Under win, isn't that the port number of the server ?

nope, it's the display number.
see http://hal.trinhall.cam.ac.uk/support/vnc
for details.

Also, if your windows machine support terminal services (XP or 2000 server), then I would suggest using that instead of vnc. In FC2, the terminal services client is rdesktop.

Am I right in thinking that you want to VNC from Windows to Feodora?
If this is the case, it's something I played around with, but unfortuantely I can't find my notes. It's fairly simple to do this in a basic fashion, but it is more complicated if you want to connect to 'real' diplays.
I was initially confused becuase when using Win you install VNC and connect from a remote workstation and find the same desktop that you would see if sitting at that machine. With VNC on Linux this is not the case because of the way things are designed to be multi-user from the ground up (i.e. with multiple X displays). This page (http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/) will give details better than I can.
Real VNC version 4 appears to provide support for VNCing the native '0' desktop without fudges - see this page (http://www.realvnc.com/v4/x0.html). However, I can't recall if I got this to work.
Perhaps someone who has tried this with success could step in and give some guidance?
Toby.

Thanks Mr Watson, that's basically exactly what I wanted to do.

I see that I had this backwards - sorry about that. Helps if I read the thread a little closer ;-)
