View Full Version : Looking for a good mail server HOW-TO

Ok here is what I am trying to accomplish with FC...
I do not want to run a fully functionall mail server, in the sense of having my ISP add MX records and CNAMES to the box. What I want to do is download the mail from our mail providers server onto mine. Then scan it for viruses and spam. And have the users in my LAN access the LAN mail server using suqirrel mail or a desktop mail client. Is this even possible? The reason why I do not want to have a fully functional mail server is security risks and frankly do not want the overhead of worrying about that mail server crashing. If this box were to go down, we can still access the mail via our mail provider, this is in a sense just another degree to cut out spam and viruses.
I've been reading HOW-TOs for courier, postfix, fetchmail, squirrell mail, clam anti-virus...but I'm just confused on what should be working hand in hand. Could someone help clarify or point me in the direction of a good HOW-TO.
Thanks! :)

You can do it ..
I've used this method successfuly with sendmail, clamav, filescan, mimedefang, spamassassin, fetchmail, squirrelmail and it works extremely well !!
Read this how-to setup mimedefang
http://www.rudolphtire.com/mimedefang-howto/
Whilst it's not a complete guide, hopefully it'll get you started & point you in the right direciton.

Another good tutorial:
http://www.sm6rpz.se/mailserver.html
I tried this tutorial, but I can get this working well.
If anyone would like to publish a detailed how-to based on this I think would be great!

Actually, the simplest I've found is eXtremail ('http://www.extremail.com'). You can literally be up and running within minutes with just about every kind of security on your mail server known to mankind...

You didn't have any problems getting Extremail started? Whenever I try to start it, I just get "Errors starting eXtremail server", with no more info to go on. I've had no luck with it at all.

The downside of extreMail is that you have to be root to start it...

I'm root right now, but still having issues getting it started. I found the line
"And check if any daemon is already listening on the port 25. If it is so, deactivate the daemon at start up (on the rc files) or simple uninstall the mail server, if you believe you are not going to use it anymore." in the manual which I think is related...
When I do a netstat -anp | grep 25, I get
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:1025 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1791/xinetd
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2733/master
Which I do belive means that something is listening on port 25 (master). So what the heck is master? And where do I disable it?
Can ya tell I'm a linux newb? I've been stumbling around through unix for years, especially now with OSX, but half the time I feel like a genius and half the time I feel like an idiot! Can you shed some light on this one for me?

awesome... i got extremail to work
name@name.com rules...
my first hurdle teach42 was installing the package which required
rpm --nodeps -ivh eXtremail*.rpm
look in /etc/rc5.d if you have a graphical startup -or- /etc/rc3.d if you have a command line startup
look for a file like S##smtp

Oh, yeah - you have to uninstall sendmail first. Sorry 'bout that.
P. S. Just "randomly" deleting "start" files in /etc/rc.# is a good way to prevent a system from starting properly. If you must enable/disable system services, use the GUI or try "chkconfig" from a command-line.

hey, i didnt suggest to delete it...
if you want a web interface, webXtremail works quite well, it is based on squirrelmail, but configured to work easily with eXtremail
it took me 5 minutes to set it up on top of eXtremail

Hmm
I've been playing around with some stuff and come up with a combination of fetchmail, sendmail, clamav, mailscanner and openwebmail and webmin for administration. You could use squirrelmail & dovecot as well.
Just use the RPMS on the mailscanner site
http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/downloads.shtml
Install ClamAV binaries from
http://www.clamav.net/binary.html#pagestart
Install webmin ( use dag repository if you like or set it up yourself )
Openweb mail packages from
http://openwebmail.org/openwebmail/download/redhat/rpm/release/
and these are needed
http://openwebmail.org/openwebmail/download/redhat/rpm/packages/fc2/
You'll need to read and edit the config files to suit .. it's not that hard.
Then test your mailserver with www.testvirus.org .. Mailscanner / Clamav should block them.

Well, I finally get running my own mail server, with a lot of functions, I tried this searching web and I have never saw a great tutorial like this with a lot of details. Just copy and paste and edit some config files.

Curious. I'm directing to this reply to the chap(s) running webXtremail.
I tried downloading it today and seems to be down. Could you kindly post the rpm for me to download? I'm not sure when they'll get it back up? Thanks in advance!
Or you can email me the package? cle.arodef[at]clrb.net.
