I have set up samba so I can share some folders on fedora with my windows box and the printer. The problem I get is when i click the computer in windows network neighbourhood it tells me there is a duplicate name ie the localhost.

If i change the name within fedora it gives all sorts of problems with everything else. Is there a way around this problem or someway to solve it?

There must be someone with samba working. I can get it to run fine if I use Suse 9, but I don like Suse as a os.

What have i done wrong as this is driving me round the bend.

To change your hostname do this:
First, exit X by dropping to rnlvl3:

#init 3

Set /etc/sysconfig/network to:

HOSTNAME=newname.localdomain

Set /etc/hosts to:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost newname

Finally, reboot and your new hostname will be changed. (Look for a "setting hostname" message when PC boots up.)

To get my Samba working I also had to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf

server string = my_machine_name

(as explained here (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?postid=863151#post863151) )

Just managed to do without going down runlevel. You fire up favorite graphic editor, edit files, save'em, reboot.
Also remember to open ports in firewall, or disable it if you're behind another one (or two).

Sorry if any of these sounds like rapism... :confused:
