Under Fedora Core 2 X86_64 on a MSI K8N Neo-Platinum based system, I frequently get a pop-up window saying "The application nautilius died unexpectedly". So far, the only thing I am using on my desktop is 3 terminal windows,Mozilla and kppp which I run from the command line. I have read debates about the "spatial nautilius" (if that's what this is) but I have never tried it.

When I logoff and pick the shutdown option, the machine often does not shutdown. The desktop remains visible, keyboard input doesn't work. I can move the mouse cursor around but not do any functions with it. There is a small window on the tool bar named "error" and I have a paranoid suspicion that it has something to do with that nautilus error. I can't get too upset about this because if I press the power button, the machine shuts down in an orderly fashion.

(And why does the phrase "the many chambered nautilus" stick in my mind, was it from a poem or a book?)

A nautilus was a prehistoric crustacean type creature that was segmented and thus is where you get the 'many chambers'. anyhow: Your problem is unusual, has this happened ever since your install? This sounds like a buggy version/install of Nautilus, perhaps you might want to try updating/reinstalling/checking your install media?

The problem has been present since the install. What I am most curious about is what is starting nautilus? I don't use gui file managers. Nothing is being mounted that might cause it to pop up.

I have discovered that this is what causes the hang on shutdown (which I do from the gui logout). If I maximize the little "error" window icons to a nautilus error window and close it, the shutdown proceeds. This has to be done quickly before a new nautilus error window pops-up --- it makes an amusing game.

I've tried to do an update with yum over several nights. If this ever succeeds, I'll report whether it cures the problem.

And I didn't quote the error message in the window correctly. It says "quit" instead of "died".

Juding from the FC test 3 bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=122087
I might be able to work around the problem by editing fstab and making the removable media noauto.

I had this same problem this weekend on a new install of FC2 x86_64 on a K8N NEO Platinum. I overcame this problem by using up2date to update the gnome libraries. I hope this helps.

I can't get up2date to run on one massive update of everything, but haven't tried it on a single library package.

Finally finished updates after several sessions of
yum -y update
Now the nautilus error doesn't appear --- yet.
