View Full Version : Sharing Windows net connection

Since my wireless network PCI card has no driver for current versions of Linux, I would like to do the following: install the card in a Windows computer, connect the Windows and Fedora boxes (via ethernet) and configure Fedora to use the Windows machine's connection to a router (which is connected to the Internet). IOW, the Linux machine would have no direct connection to the Internet.
If this is as complicated as it sounds, please feel free to point to a web page where the configuration is explained. Or, explaining here is OK too :D Thanks.

You'll have to set up the Windows system as a router - I think there's some free tools to do this, but since I haven't used Windows in 6 years... ;)

Thanks for that tip. As it turns out, it seems it is now possible to do within XP itself. I found two good descriptions of what needs to be done (the Windows side is certainly a lot easier than I expected! :)), but nothing yet on what I need to do on the Linux box.
The two pages I found are here (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2003/10/31/WinXPUnwired.html) and here (http://www.haxial.com/faq/routerconfig/winxp/).
Is there anything I need to do in the Linux configuration or, assuming DHCP service, will it just find and configure itself for the connection?
Thanks.

Normally if your windows BOX acts as a DHCP server, your linux box (client) will receive a ip adress. You just have to configure your linux box to receive ip by a DHCP server.
And you don't have to configure anything else ... when you want to go on the web, the router give your request , connect to the web site and return response to your linux box ...
hope it helps,
