Will Fedora Core 3 ultimately release with the 2.6.8.1 kernel? I would like to be able to burn CDs with my new linux install, and this particular kernel seems to ahve some serious issues.

From what I have read FC3 will be launched as a new kernel.

You can fix the CD burning problem. I saw the workaround on this board. I don't remember where but you can do a search and find the thread.

Don't you just have to be root to burn CD's?

Seems simple to me, it's what you had to do years ago with XCDRoast.

Logging in as root is a bit of a hastle really, I basically would have to stop most of my other processes when I was done because I wouldn't want to linger around in root.

If so, that means a kernel update must be due soon, as FC2 contains a pretty recent kernel version.

I could be way off base with that, but with a major release like FC3 it just seems they would release a new kernel. I have 2.6.8-1.521 right now. My install DVD which I bought with a magazine in August came with 2.6.7 ..... and right after I installed it updated the kernel.

I have not tried to burn a CD, but there are so many programs out there it seems like one of them would work.

FC3 testing is currently using the 2.6.8-1.603 kernel. It is numbered 2.6.8 because 2.6.9 has not been released.. but this kernel is not using 2.6.8 sources (this is a naming convention that may be confusing some).

2.6.8-1.603 is using the 2.6.9-rc3-bk7 which was the newest code available on Thu Oct 07 2004 when Dave Jones changed to this starting point. A new kernel for FC3? Yes, Yes.
