Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions for a PCI based 802.11 card for a wireless media center I'm setting up based around Fedora Core 3.

I currently have an FC3 laptop setup with a netgear MA111 USB adapter which was tough to set up and configure (linux-wlan-ng) and only partially works.

Does anyone have a successful configuration to share? I'd like to not go the same route as the MA111.

I use an original Orinoco Gold 802.11b card that works in any distro I've tried so far. Did you need a 'G' card or is 'B' ok?

I have a smc 2802w b/g pci wireless card that works great with FC3. This card uses the prism54 drivers included in 2.6.x kernels (FC specific and vanilla kernel.org) Only thing you have to do is drop a firmware file in /lib, instructions on www.prism54.org website. Works beautifully for me, keep a constant 30-54Mb connection to my wireless router. Works quite fine with my d-link di-524 wireless router.

Shame you only want PCI. I have the Linksys WUSB11 that works like a champ.

OK, thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I'll try out both items listed above. USB is OK, I just want to stay away from Prism2.5 USB since the current drivers don't seem as complete.

I purchased the Proxim Orinoco Gold PCMCIA a/b combo card and installed in a legacy IBM A20M laptop. I can't get the card to work with FC3 (and FC3 can't discover the card). I am a NOVICE and am struggling through learning the OS. Can anyone please tell me how to find the right driver, and how to install (for dummy-level), please? I'm good with the Windows stuff, but FC3 is still a foreign language to me at this point. It won't beat me, though. Thanks in advance for any help/advice !

=\ I have a WUSB11 ver.2.6 and am unable to have this work with FC3. It apparently works only with FC1.....

Since you have managed to make it work, can you tell me how you did it? I'm a noob btw, hope you don't mind.

I have two LinkSys WPC55AG cards capable of 802.11 A, B and G. They are Atheros based and work great with madwifi. Just get the latest via CVS and "make;make install" and that's about it. Set your wep key and mode in your interface config and away you go.

Any fry's fans here? Remember my previous post in this thread? Well last saturday (2.12.05) I purchased this wireless card (http://www.airlink101.com/products/awlc4030.html) from fry's for $15.99 and downloaded the madwife drivers from atrpms and now it works great. It's part of my network I built this past weekend. The router is also from airlink101 for $21.99.

Wow, is that $15.99 USD? I might have to get a couple of them. I don't know much about the airlink101 but I have a couple of the WRT54G LinkSys units because I like to customize and compile my own Linux firmware and make them do neat tricks:

http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net:81/

Of course they are a little more than $21.99. :) I still can't believe they can sell for that, it's just crazy! I paid around $60-$70 USD for each of the devices I mentioned.

Yes $15.99 USD + USD taxes too they use the atheros chipset....I got lucky I guess. They had both items on special for the weekend. :p

Has anyone gotten a Linksys WMP11 (ver 4) to work under Fedora Core 3? If not, I'm in the same boat as the parent poster, need a wireless PCI card that works, preferably out of the box. I've had enough mucking about with ndiswrapper and linuxant (neither of which even recognized that the card exists).

How to I determine that? with iwconfig? I know the signal strength is 82% for linux and 78-81% in windows but I am experiencing a drop in the signal.....but not frequently so I am wondering if that is normal?

Yeah, iwconfig should show you the bitrate. I was just curious if that card was running at 54Mbps or 11Mbps, or somewhere in between.

Where did you get it? The Prism54 web site states that there is a newer version of this card that contains a different chipset that is not supported. Newegg has these but they can't tell me which version of the card I will get. I'm already paying a 15% restocking fee + shipping charges to RMA the Linksys WMP11 I bought and I'd like to avoid doing it again.

Is there no wireless card that "just works" under linux?

As I mentioned I have two LinkSys WPC55AG both Atheros. As far as I know these cards always did have and always will have Atheros chipsets but do some digging. They work great with madwifi as I said.

From http://www.majordojo.com/archives/000457.php:
"Linksys has released three different cards under the name "WMP11." The first version they released uses a Prism2 chipset, and it works just dandy under Linux. The second card, known as "WMP11 v2.7" uses the Broadcom chipset and is not supported by the linux-wlan-ng driver. The third card, "WMP11 v4" uses the InProComm chipset, yet another chipset not supported by this open source wireless driver set. "

Linksys has lost my trust and business with all this confusing chipset switching... And anyway, I'm looking for a PCI card not PCMCIA, thanks for the reply tho, VoidMain... That article goes on to say that a Netgear MA311 worked well with a virgin install of FC2. I don't trust eBay so I've been searching around for a reputable retailer but no one seems to carry them anymore. Currently researching whether the Netgear WG311 will work... According to LinuxCompatible (http://www.linuxcompatible.org/cdetail11290.html) there are solutions for v1 and v2 of this card for FC3:

"WG311v2 working under Fedora Core 3. Watch out, WG311v1 is Atheros chipset (can use MADwifi drivers), WG311v2 uses TI ACX111 chipset (must use drivers from acx100.sourceforge.net)"

::sigh:: off to do more research to make sure I don't end up with some new v3 of this card featuring a new non-linux compatible chipset...

Just as a follow-up to Detour's message...The WG311 can also use the Linuxant (commercial) drivers for free. TI has made an agreement with the company to support the drivers as OEM for any TI chipsets. I would look at this if you would like a solid driver and support to get it installed for FREE.

You can get the drivers (RPM pre-built for Fedora or source) at www.linuxant.com

Hi there, I found my SMC 2802w card at CompUSA

You can also find the Netgear WG511 that uses the prism54 drivers at CompUSA, CircuitCity and Best Buy. Just be sure to pick the ones that say "Made in Taiwan." The Chinas use a different - non-prism54 - chipset.

After installing madwifi drivers it says 36 but I can also configure it to be auto.
