About me:
Just to let you all know, I've only pickup Linux (Fedora) since April 2004, therefore I might not be aware of many things and the most efficient way of doing things. So please forgive my ignorance! I’ve already gave my best!

There are still many more topics that I want to include in, but due to time constraint, I can only do it bit by bit. So, please be patients with me.

Common Feedbacks:
Why not just use yum for Fedora Updates and 3rd Party Programs? It's easier that way!
This is an alternative way of installation, meant for users who do not always have broadband access, so that he/she can download the packages elsewhere and then install it offline. Coffee or tea, it’s all up to your preference.

Not a very good guide! Information is dodgy and not very well laid out! There are much better guides on the net! This isn't too useful!
I do agree that, there are much better guides out on the net! Just to let you all know, this guide started out from my personal reference notes; of my day to day effort on learning Linux (Fedora). My notes were never intended to be published on the net, till I noticed from forums that there are people who are facing the same issues that I had before. That's when I figured out, why not share my notes! I've never declared my guide to be good, so please don't be too harsh on me. I'm neither an expert nor a writer, and this is my first time writing a guide. Trust me, if I could do better, I would. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm here to learn too.

To Do List:
-Correction: For installations and configurations (use normal user then su to be root)
-3rd Party Programs: NTFS (read)
-Networking: smbclient
-Security: Disable shutdown, halt, reboot command for normal users
-Hardware: Memory stick/Thumb drive
-Hardware: Palm

To Learn List:

Help out, read:
http://fedoraguide.org
*Web site still new, keep it simple till have time for web programming. For now more topics...

Can you please put on your fag how to install Xine and all the software needed by it to work?
Also it would me great to put a fag explaning how to install driver to be able to see ntfs partitions and how to mount them.
It would be great to have this thing also.
You have done a great job this far!
Congratulations.
P.s
If it is possible to add for Mplayer the gui installation because i dont know much how to function it from command line.
There is a mplayer-gui somewhere there.
Why to use cli if we can ease our selfs with a gui?
:)

Thanks for feedback.

I've added your request to my To Do and To Learn List.

If not mistaken mplayer-gui is not GUI installation. It's the GUI of mplayer in X-Windows (gmplayer).

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm here to learn too.

You might want to take a look at the FedoraFAQ (http://www.fedorafaq.org/). Some of your solutions seem overly complicated, like installing Java for instance.

Good effort though.

It would be better to use the su command to become root rather than doing everything as a logged in root user I think.

Wow! I'm encouraged! First day release and I've got a translation already!

Here's a Russian translation of "Unofficial Fedora Core 2 Guide for Beginners" by Dmitry Shurupov:

Thanks for feedback.

I think using su is the better way too. My concern is afraid some beginners would be confused. That's why I suggest install and configure using root, but when day to day usage use normal user.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm here to learn too.

No, you musn't encourage people to do it all as root. Otherwise they'll become lazy and only log in as root, thats when damage occurs.

Su is the way to go.

Ok. I'll take everyone's advice. I've added it to my To Do List.

Hello,
Tux2furious is there a way you can add this feature:
When we press the eject button on our cd-roms,dvd-roms the fedora to unmount the drive automatically and let the tray open so we dont have to unmount it manually to have that cd,dvd come out!
Happy to give you some tough things to do ;)
Untill next time,
May the force be with you!

Another suggestion is to use su -c "command" or sudo.

This is exactly what it is all about...our experiences with FC 1& 2 are as varied as we are...no one is going to have the same problem nor the same solution...don't complain, why not contribute to this project...

thanks for your guide

Just uploaded:

Unofficial Fedora Core 2 Guide for Beginners (Revision: 2.2.0)
http://fedoraguide.org/fc2/fc2beginnersguide.html

Entire new section on how to install Fedora Updates and 3rd Party Programs using yum
*Repositories mixing are not encouraged. Though it should work, use at your own risk!
*Will use Fedora.us and Livna.org repositories once they have more packages.
*Reason why commented out Fedora “Extra” Repositories in /etc/yum.conf during “yum update” is because Freshrpms.net repository conflicts with Basic Fedora repository (dependency problem)

This guide ain't complete. So stay tuned for more!

Why do you use -y in yum. It is very dangerous! Why don't you use
other (http://atrpms.net/repos/)repos?Like NewRPMS?

04a) # yum -y install xmms-mp3

Afaik xmms-mp3 is only on livna.org. You don't suggest to use it, so it won't be installed. Please prove me wrong.
And why don't you give any credits? Yes "*Link(s) collected from: Here"" is a nice beginning, but giving credits in the articles would be also nice :)

Thanks for feedback.

True also, not sure why i used -y. OK will correct it.

Mix with other repos? 2 is already headache. Hope dag will have it all. Best to have 1 place for packages, else dependency problems will arise (just like yum update won't work if freshrpms.net repo is connected)

Freshrpms.net has xmms-mp3. So it will work. Have tested all of them today. Should work like charm.

Credits section... that's a good idea. OK will put in too...

Dammit just use the official repositories!

foolish
2004-06-23, 07:05 AM CDT
Please use fedora.us (fedora-extras) and livna.org repositories if you can. Try to encourage use of these repositories, as they are the ones that encourage contribution and for users to get involved. Besides, getting used to using fedora.us isn't a bad idea as fedora-extras will be part of the default yum.conf once it's done.

Thanks for the feedback

I always like official stuff, but really missing a lot of fun if were to use theirs only. Will try again later

http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showpost.php?p=78175&postcount=6
he suggested to choose either one, better not to mix... therefor i choose "other" group because currently they have really a lot more

Eg. If I use Livna's xmms-mp3 and Freshrpms's xmms-wma, is there going to be problem? That's why I worry dependecy problem, so choose to go for "others" for now

Will change it immediately, if they have xmms-wma, d4x, amsn, j2re

I'll take your advice, will change it progressively

Forgive my naiveness, why not livna.org takes freshrpms or dag packagages and put into their unstable or testing repository? Isn't that going to really speed things up?

Can I still keep the -y flag for yum?

I recalled why I used it, because taking so long to wait for it to connect. and by the time it is connected, have to press y to confirm. Better to keep the -y easier right? Don't think it is a security issue cause it's so slow before it can actually be installed. Any time can terminate it.

Same like rpm, they don't prompt to be istalled right?

Correct me if I am wrong...

Just looked at livna.org again... (last i check they do not have that many packages)

A bit tempted to use theirs, if i were to solely use livna (online and manual) and then suggest users to only use manual way to install the missing programs (eg. j2re, mozilla-j2re, xmms-wma, d4x, amsn)

Is that better? Will the mentioned packages above, going to have dependency problem with linva.org?

Hope I can stick with the officials repositories.

Just tried livna.org + fedora.us mix

Date: 23rd June 2004
Time: 11AM

First attempt: perl-Video-DVDRip (manual way)
Downloaded all the required packages, but both of the repository seems to not have subtitleripper
livna.org doen't have lzo, have to go fedora.us to get it.
Why can't livna.org contains all the required dependency packages?
Any idea?
