Hi there,
Is anyone able to use a USB jumpdrive or equivilant on FC?

If so what brand and size?

Thanks.

Same brand, 256MB (VFAT)
Unknown Brand, 128MB (VFAT)

After a number of folks reported problems in bugzilla
with the Lexar usb drives, and the sandisk ones, I went
out and picked some up. I was somewhat disappointed that
they both worked out of the box[1] for me.

I considered that it may be usb controller specific, but
I've used them both on a variety of USB1.1 and USB2.0 controllers.

I have a generic 128Meg flash drive, plugs in and works without any
problems.

Said box is a called a "clamshell" and I hate them. I'm surprised that
plastic shards have not cut someone's body open as the person struggled
to open a clamshell package, prompting said person to sue the
manufacturer for knowingly using packaging which is actually dangerous
to folks of all ages.

Actually I also have a PNY Attache 256 Mb which works equally as well as
the A-Data and a newish CompUSA 128 Mb model which also works great. The
real problem is drive pricing, not system compatibility. Prices have
dropped a lot, but are still insanely high. The cost per megabyte is
really high at around USD 8.8 cents for the A-Data. I'd like to get a 20
Gb flash drive for no more than USD $20.00 which works out to
0.000976562 cents per megabyte. Now on 20 Gb, I can do some serious stuff.

I think it's safe to say that you'll be waiting quite a while
for prices to reach *that* low. 20GB of regular memory is going
to be silly prices for some time to come unless some technological
breakthrough occurs, flash memory moreso.

Even 1GB DIMMs are only just starting to get affordable.
The most affordable 'large' USB key I've seen so far
was 1GB for ~$59.

I've been cut already, but never thought of suing. I thought one has to
cut the finger off (or something else as serious as that) to have a
case... am I wrong?

I wouldn't know. Perhaps you can consult a lawyer specializing in
product liability lawsuits to get an opinion. I haven't researched this
carefully, but remember when McDonald's and other hot coffee vendors
began printing the following warning label on disposable (stryofoam and
paper paper) coffee cups: "warning: this product is extremely hot" or
words to that affect. Wasn't that the result of a lawsuit from someone
who spilled hot coffee on himself or herself?

Well, 20 gb of flash memory is just a few components on a quite small
PCB. The components shouldn't be expensive to mass produce, assemble,
package and then ship -- especially compared to a 20 Gb, 3.5" hard drive.

You are still right, I'll have to wait till I see gray hair coming out
of my chest before flash prices become reasonable. Hard drive prices
have been high for years and I think there is at least some type of
price fixing going on to keep those prices high.

I think you're confused. 20GB of RAM is going to be quite
a lot more than 'a few components'.
Here's a 2GB DIMM ...
http://store1.yimg.com/I/memx_1826_75952942
(a bargain at $799 ;-)

20GB of RAM would be *lots* of components 8)

I'm using a 128 MB popdrive. Just mount it like any other USB HD or
camera ... Fedorafaq.org has a tutorial, I think.

Gee...the DIMM is made in Germany, Dave. No wonder it costs so much! For
about $275 total, I bought 4 X 512M sticks of A-Data (rated as DDR400)
from newegg.com. The system wouldn't boot in dual-channel mode at that
speed but did boot and run great when clocked down to the DDR 333 ("2T")
timings. So now I have 2 gigs, didn't pay $798, and still have very nice
performance indeed.

I probably am confused, but I still firmly think we are getting price
cheated and price fixed for tiny amounts of flash. Some memory makers
appeal to various governments to set high tarrifs on memory imports in
order to slow down their competition. I'd rather see the competition
flourish because then prices will drop and other things become possible
and good.

I have a Lexar Media 1gig JumpDrive 2.0 pro. I have had the odd
lockup but that is under FC1 and is related to another problem.

Note, some drives require that the file system be created as the old
file system is Windows based and needs to be removed. Look at the
manufacuters WWW site or the manual for details. Full HowTo for the
one stick that one other person that I work with has. I cannot read
his stick in the default format.

I've got a Kingston 128M that works rather nice. It's got a switch on
the side to make it r/o if I want. I have had a couple problems getting
it to unmount, but I think that was just me being in a rush, not
thinking things through. It works well, and it's fast.

Thanks

Common problem, even in windows with USB drives. Seen it and
discussed it before. They need some sort of lock to prevent the drive
from being removed to be perfect. Oh the search for perfection. :)
