Has anyone been able to get this installed on PPC? I can't seem to get past booting the boot.iso (which I have now downloaded and burned twice). It won't recognize the isos on my nfs share (i tried both at work and at home) nor will it eject the boot cd to allow me to insert CD1. . . I don't think I am doing anything wrong, and I have done the install with FC3 multiple times. Any ideas?
I am installing on an iBook 800 Mhz, I prefer to use NFS for the install but I can go another route if I need to.

Booted isolinux from the hard drive by copying stuff from boot.iso and putting an entry in yaboot.conf. It allowed me to install through disk1 but at disk two it always says "openjade-1.3.2-16 can't be opened" on two separate burns so I guess the image I downloaded for CD2 is corrupt. At least I've gotten some progress. . . .

Seems it took 4 burns of CD2 to get a good one. . . ouch
Its chugging along now installing. . . wahooO!

I just told my bro about FC4 & PPC support. He's thinking about it but I told him it's not a release yet. Is it fast or is it a slug on your iB? My bro has the same model as you.
I just sent him the link to this forum too. He knew about linuxquestions.org but not about here which is better because you can have attachments and screenshots, etc.
XFce would be a nice window manager with a iBook because it's alot like OS/X, hrm....

Has anyone tried an install from DVD? I have burned one DVD from the iso image and it did not boot for me on a Pismo/400 laptop. Perhaps due to deficient Disk Copy tool in Jaguar/10.2 system?

I took the plung and took on the task of installing FC4 test 1 on my tangerine iBook. Yes, I tried to install from NFS from my server direct from the ISOs which failed (gonna have to see if a bug report has been filed yet). But once I went in, extracted all of the ISOs, then the install program went thru without a hitch over NFS. It even configured yaboot correctly! (at least I think so). I did not check to see if Autopartition created an apple bootstrap partition, I just followed the directions found in the FC3 PPC install guide for the most part. The graphical install would NOT work but that's because my iBook does not like the framebuffer driver, same on the boot CD and on the install as well for xOrg. Once I switch the driver file to ATI, it all works excellent. Sound still seems to be broken.
I do however get an odd error message, and I'm not sure if this has to do with SELINUX (I just chose it to warn me), but it's saying something about an invalide IDE 0 or something to that effect. I cannot remember the exact error message off the top of my head but it does have me wondering. I will post it once I check it out again.

FC4 is installed now, I can't boot it however because it freezes at cups (it did this before in FC3 but I somehow was able to get it to boot and disabled cups), other than that everything(that I can see so far) about it seems fine tho, it will even bring up the graphical boot. How would I manually disable cups without being booted into the system?
p.s. I am dual booting with FC3 so I can still get full linux control over the partition by mounting it :-D

Boots past cups, I have it booting to the command prompt because it freezes when I start X, I think its actually gnome thats the problem because It bring up a black screen at a proper resolution with a cursor. It just never loads a login screen or anything.
Luckily I have dual boot set up so i can still access fc3, and I have FC4 booting to the command prompt now and everythign seems to work fine until I tried to load a window manager. I am currently updating from the development tree to try and fix it.

Am I understanding this correctly,
The updates thru Yum For FC4-test1 are found under the "development" directory on any particular server? I am running this and it's coming up with 272 packages to update....ummm, is this in or around normal? Or did I just do an update to the wrong repository?

I cant boot the FC4 test1 DVD for PPC either.
Downloaded, checksum ok, Burned (twice) veryfied , ok ...
it simply wont boot. Not from DVD, not from NFS, .. even when i boot with the fc3 boot image, then swich to the DVD it fails.
So the FC4 test1 ppc DVD is not working

Did you use the FC4 boot.iso already? Also I did an NFS install by mounting the isos extracting it to a folder and installing from the folder. you should be able to do that with the DVD

Ok, that CD is booting.
It looks different then the FC3 boot.iso, cos it wont boot the FC3 isos.
However. Ill get always the following error with everything (fc3, fc4 dvd extracted, fc4 dvd iso, and the fc4 cd1):
The Fedora Core Installation tree in that directory does not seem to match your boot media. [OK]
...

Ok here the FC4 test 1 HOWTO install for your Mac, ... thanx to salpula
We will use the HDD to get the fc4 boot, then we install thru NFS.
(i assume you are familiar with NFS install and Linux a little bit)
You need the ppc verion of:
FC3 CD1
FC3 boot.iso burned
FC4 CD1 .. CD5 or CD1 and the DVD, the iso's extracted to a 2nd Mashine with Linux Installed. Thats the Installation tree. (you need CD1 and the RPMS)
Separate HDD for linux is a good idea
First, Install FC3 with the bot.iso and the FC3 cd1 minimal thru NFS, with mc, networking (smb) ... without X and Gnome and apps.
Copy the Install tree to /boot/tmp/ and Edit yaboot.conf add an item to point to the vmzliuz to that freshly copyed install tree.
dont forget to run mkofboot (and/or ybin)
Boot to that FC4 tree.
after selecting language, select NFS install.
Share the extracted tree on the other mashine, and point to the root of the installation tree
Now anaconda should start.
you can Autopartition, and X will be configured properly :)
After reboot, the mac may hang at starting Cups.
I removed rhgb quiet from the yaboot conf, now it starts perfectly
add macosx=/dev/hda or whatever to your yaboot conf

Every time I load up FC4, I keep getting this message:
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0001:10:19.0
Does anyone know what this is? I have this runnong in the first generation iBook.
Also it seems that ever since I upgraded to the latest Kernel, my video has been broken in Xorg. Anyone know of any specific changes that might have affected this?

If your yaboot config is not set up right you might get a kernel error on boot sometimes ( I did) so that could be your PCI problem (does the error message show up twice?) can you hit dmesg or tail /var/log/messages to find the line and copy and paste it?
Whats wrong with your video in xorg? Try resetting the video card driver in system-config-display.

The Video problem, I had a very crazy wash of colors and no "understandable" image on the screen from FC3. Then I commented out the fbdev file in the conf file for Xorg and any reference to it, and lo and behold, it worked!
Then FC4 came around and it looked like it worked fine under the same xorg configuration that I had in FC3 and just assumed that the FB driver was just broken and will probably work in the official release. However, upon installing the latest kernel, my "fix" was broken and the screen is "understandable" now but the image is all "kockeyed" (i.e. the screen over wraps itself so the mouse will continue right off the screen and appear on the left side of the screen).... Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Okay addon for the PCI error, after looking into the dmesg further, the line states:
PCI: Probing PCI hardware
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0001:10:19.0
Apple USB OHCI 0001:10:19.0 disabled by firmware
it then goes on to say:
Registering openpic with sysfs...
usbcore: registered new driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new driver hub
So I dont know what this is about....
Then for the video problem:
In the dmesg it says:
Using unsupported 800x600 ATY,RageM_Lp at 91000000, depth=8, pitch=800
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 100x37
fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /pci@f0000000/ATY,RageM_Lp@10
...

agpgart: configuring for size idx: 4
agpgart: AGP aperture is 16M @ 0x0
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925
Maybe this can help out some of you to look into my problem more?

On an unrelated note, has anyone gotten themself into where after typing "yum update" it then gives you "Running transaction check
Processing Dependency: libmusicbrainz.so.2 for package: gstreamer-plugins
Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: libmusicbrainz.so.2 is needed by package gstreamer-plugins"
Does anyone know how to get around this or get it straightened out? I tried to uninstall the gstreamer-plugins rpm but it would break a lot of my Gnome install, so I opted not to do this. I did check I DO have libmusicbrainz installed on my computer and it is also in the list of updates....
Thanks

I have the same problem. I still haven't figured out how to update libmusicbrainz but i did get around updating all my outher rpms by running "yum --exclude=libmusicbrainz update" this let all the other pakets update without updating libmusicbrainz.

I figured out a way to update libmusicbrainz. Its not the cleanest way (or the safest), but it looks like it worked. What I did was download the rpm that I wanted (limusicbrainz-2.1.1-1.i386.rpm) and ran a force install without checking dependencies "rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force *.rpm" (specificly for me "rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force libmusicbrainz-2.1.1-1.i386.rpm" - either will work) all in all it got it updated and I haven't found anything broken yet, so i guess it worked for as much as I can tell, though I'm not making any guarantees.

steward, lets me see what your yaboot.conf looks like, I had the same issue with not allocating resources till I cleaned mine up.
I decided not to update anything that didn't work automatically through yum just because its still development, so I figure if it can't even install its not ready yet. ::shrug::
And my FC4 runs just as well or better than FC3 did so I don't want to break that perception cause I feel really good about fc4 now lol.

Okay Salpula, just want to say thanks for really looking into my problems here. I really do appreciate it. Here is my yaboot, let me know if you can make hi nor hare of it:
# yaboot.conf generated by anaconda

That there is my yaboot.conf file
Now I dont know if this is related or not but when I just installed a new updated kernel via yum, there is a warning message that I recieved:
WARNING:/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1208_FC4/kernel/drivers/video/vga16fb.ko needs unknown symbol vgacon_remap_base
Thanks. Hope this helps.

Try this yaboot.conf, I have edited your most recent kernel entry and you can make the rest of them look similar to this one, I am pretty confident that this should make your boot look much better.
The "WARNING:/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1208_FC4/kernel/drivers/video/vga16fb.ko needs unknown symbol vgacon_remap_base" shows up in my system too, doesn't seem to make a difference.
Good luck!
p.s. Don't forget to "mkofboot -v" after you edit it! (don't use ybin)

Okay I thik I may have found a way around my video problem... I added the "noaccel" option ot the xorg.conf file and things seem to have work. I only started X up once since adding the option, so far so good, display came up great but havn't tried it a second time... So I'll let you know if I can repeat the good news.
As far as yum update......
Seems broken again, this time it's complaining about a dependency libFLAC for the vorbis file but I checked and I do have libFLAC installed on my laptop so I dont know what it's complaining about.... I've been using the "exclude" workaround for libmusicbrainz file but it's not looking like I'm able to continure the workout for this file....
Anybody haveing any similar experiences? solutions?
