So how could one -- persay one wanted to -- try out some simple XGL files on Fedora? I would like to get whatever experimental version of it is out there working on FC4t2 when it comes out on April 11th. I'm just planning ahead. Anyone tried Xgl out yet?

Yeah, xgl looks extremely promising. As fedora tries to be a cutting edge distro i'm hoping for it in fc6...

i would there would be no chance of getting this in fc5, i think the release date of the final build is basically dependant on when gnome 2.14 gets released, the xgl stuff hasn't even been backported into the gnome tree yet.

i'd expect it in fc6, and before you ask, its very unlikely to be available as a yum update to fc5.

I seriously hope, that they won't ditch X.Org for that... having the need to own a suitable graphics adapter is not nice.. especially for older machines

Xgl is a modular X server for X.Org, so I doubt they will be getting rid of it.

it is planned to be a replacement for X.Org..
in it's umpthteens version obviously :)

Hi

Here is how one can test the new eyecandy stuff with Fedora (Rawhide).
See https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2006-February/msg00641.html

Note that it is not working with the binary nvidia driver at this time
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2006-February/msg00647.html
but nvidia is working on it http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-February/012764.html

Edit: one can keep track of aiglx development here

I've installed the rpms but I dont see any changes in my system. Im using kde, so I installed gnome too thinking that it only works with gnome. So how do I enable those fading stuff and other xgl functionalities.

Now that's weird..my shift key doesnt work with punctionation marks. Even I cant type the question mark while typing here. Only the letters work.

Do you know about AIGLX?
The Xgl's rival created by the Fedora project.

I would like AIGLX on FC5 rather than XGL. There's no reason to replace X.Org.

AIGLX is a viable alternative than XGL. No wonder that videocard manufacturer like Nvidia prefer that approach due to the use of existing codes.

HowTo install Xgl on Fedora Core 5 (Test3/RawHide)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1- install nvidia's display driver and make it work right with your current Xorg server.

2- install Xgl and friends from http://www.auroralinux.org/people/spot/Xgl-FC5T3/
yes you need update the mesa packages provided there.
(you can use yum if you like)

3- add

[servers]
0=Xgl

[server-Xgl]
name=Xgl server
command=/usr/bin/Xgl -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv -audit 0
chooser=false
handled=true
flexible=true
priority=0

to /etc/gdm/custom.conf

4- go to your gnome system preferences -> sessions and add:
compiz --replace gconf &;gnome-window-decorator &

5- restart gdm with something like /usr/sbin/gdm-restart
it should start the Xgl server and compiz will take over as the composite/window manager.
there will be no window decorations at the first try, this will get better with step

6- start gconf-editor and navigate to apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options and add the effect plugins
to "active_plugins".
add: decoration wobbly fade minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place switcher
(one at a time by clicking the add button)
after adding all of them it should read
active_plugins [gconf,decoration,wobbly,fade,minimize,cube,rotate, zoom,scale,move,resize,place,switcher]

7- now hit strg/alt/backspace to restart X and there should be a nice OpenGL rendered desktop
with all kind of effects (!)
(note, you can tweak the effects with gconf-editor (/apps/compiz/plugins))
for more tips on compiz see http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz

thats it.

if you have to reinstall the nvidia drivers later some time (i used the .run package) you need
to reinstall the xorg-x11-server-Xgl server and the mesa-* packages after this too.
(this will get better when nvidia have their new driver out so one can use them instead of the mesa OpenGL/nvidia mix)

for complete Xgl joy get jimmac's Xgl-wallpaper too! :-)
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/weblog.php/Artwork/XGL-wallpapers.php

-
and yes i know about AIGLX,
but it doesn't work with the nvidia driver at this time, so Xgl is nice alternative to play with ;-)

Yup, I know AIGLX. Tried it before the day it was released. My friend tried it too but it messed up his fedora. He can't even login back to his computer. I guess it was still premature to try it out. Maybe a couple of months, it will get better.

I tried searching it in gconf-editor and no pattern was found. Anything I might have missed? I have installed all the necessary packages..

compiz --replace gconf
should create the gconf keys.

maybe restarting gconf with
sudo killall gconfd-2
loads them.

to instal lthe AIGLX package see here
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/AiglxOnFedora?action=show

and to make it simple as to turn it off and on I wrote this script last night

Copy and paste into gedit and save it as AIGLX.sh
after saving the file , r-click and choose properties go to permissions and check the execute box for owner
then double click the script and choose run

#!/bin/bash

zenity --question --text "Do you want to turn On or Off the AIGLX Service? Yes=On / Cancel=Off" --title="$title"
if [ "$(echo $?)" == "1" ] #They clicked "no"
then # Turn off the AIGLX Service

gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool false
else
# turn on the AIGLX Service

I managed to get it working I think, under the final FC5.compiz --replace gconf &;gnome-window-decorator &This is under System > Preferences > More Preferences > Sessions
Under the "Startup Programs" tab that you add. For some reason it didn't work for me so I've to run those two commands manually after logging in.active_plugins [gconf,decoration,wobbly,fade,minimize,cube,rotate, zoom,scale,move,resize,place,switcher]Note that anyone who wishes to try should follow the above order as it matters.

It's missing GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap. I had to extract libGL.so from the ones from http://www.auroralinux.org/people/spot/Xgl-FC5T3/ and when running compiz I had to use LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/myname/mymesalibs/ compiz --replace gconf to point to the working libraries. Make sure the permissions of the libs are correct that your user can access them.

I'm using a i945g motherboard with gma950 onboard graphic processor and other than the "special effects", everything else seems to be really slow and sluggish. Like when scrolling a webpage, I can see it update line after line. The other thing is that it crashes really easily, opening one terminal to run the compiz command, then opening another tab in term would send me back to the login screen. Hope these issues get fixed soon.

Hi to all :)

Well, some time ago I installed xgl on my fc5 using the rpms provided by spot, I used the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable and everything went fine.
Yesterday I decided to try the newest compiz version, so I removed the rpm'd one, got the cvs version and compiled it by source. Since I notice it won't work, I uninstalled it, and reinstalled the old rpm. Nothing else. I checked manually the files installed by the cvs version and the rpm version and they seems to be the same as before.
Now, when I run compiz including the replacement for gconf, I get stuck, compiz and gconfd-2 processed are crazy running and are heading the top monitoring program.
So I have to kill them manually and rerun compiz without the replacement of gconf. But of course I can't modify any setting nor using my personal old preferences viewables by gconf-editor.
What's wrong? I removed the cvs version of compiz and reinstalled the rpm'd one, nothing else :confused:
Please help me if you can, because I can't understand where is the problem and I don't know where try to find errors nor a solution to them :(

Thanks a lot :p

EDIT:

I solved simply deleting all compiz keys from
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml

2. I downloaded the 3 mesa-lib files into the libfiles directory.
3. cd /home/user/libfiles

8. rpm2cpio mesa-libGL-*.rpm | cpio -id ./usr/lib/libGL*
9. mv usr/lib/libGL* .

EDIT: After every mv, I did a rm -rdfv usr

The I ran the following to initialise:

# LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/user/libfiles compiz --replace gconf decoration wobbly fade minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place switcher &

# sleep 2

# gnome-window-decorator &

How can I go about adding the above part in code into a file that runs everytime on startup instead of having to initialise every startup?

Have a look in the how-to section of these forums, there a quite a few tutroials that describe how to get XGL working.

For what you want to do try adding compiz and gnome-window-decorator to the startup section of gnome sessions. It's under the prefrances menu of gnome somewhere (sorry I'm on a windows box at work).

Also GDMsetup might be able to help you (run 'gdmsetup' from terminal) have a look under the security X-server tab.

compiz --replace gconf &;gnome-window-decorator &

This is under System > Preferences > More Preferences > Sessions
Under the "Startup Programs" tab that you add. I’ve also added it under the 1st tab. There is also a listing called default under the 1st tab that I can’t seem to get rid off. Still the compiz section doesn’t appear when I run gconf-editor.
