I install a intel Pro/1000 MT Destop Adapter ( Intel Corp 82540EM gigabit ethernet controller) and it works.
Good luck!

Thanks for your help I ended up getting my onboard Marvell card working. (It helps to have the device enabled via the jumper on the motherboard.)
I purchased a linksys gigabit card from staples ($29.99) for my windows box and set up a private net between the two machines. (linux is a workstation / fileserver) transfers are now at 300 Mb per second.
