Once you enable DHCP in 'neat' (a.k.a. system-config-network) it should "just work". Make sure you select "Automatically obtain DNS settings from provider" in the DHCP settings box.

You are running the "dhcp client". This obtains an ip address from your service provider and configures your network settings accordingly. Why do you want dhcpd? This is for a DHCP server; running this will do nothing useful for you. In fact, if you have dhcpd running, this may be causing your problem (since your dchp-client may be asking your local dchp-server for an ip-address, when it should be asking NTL for an ip address).

I use NTL broadband with a cable-modem connected over ethernet with no problems. NB. The NTL cable modems record the MAC address of your network card on first connection and will not connect to another card unless you contact NTL to get it reset. If you've recently changed your card, your connection will stop working until you contact NTL to reset your modem.

Right there is a slight glitch with these modems they hold mac address and the only way to clear this is to unplug them for 20 mins but im sorted now thanks for your help.
