I dont have any cdr`s laying around but I do have an ipod. Is it possible to use the ipod to load the minimal network boot install files into ram so that I can install on my iBook? And if so let me know how :)

You might want to check this out: http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/usb2/
See the section/topic "Lacks Boot Capability"

I had looked into this, myself, awhile back-not with an ipod but a usb drive, but basically that's what an ipod is.
(with some Apple added features) If you have or have access to a firewire (1394) drive it appears those ARE
bootable.

You wouldn't want to run an os for a computer off your ipod anyway, ipod drives are slated for a low number of reads and writes, it would kill the drive much more quickly. I haven't tried running it from a firewire drive yet but I just acquired one last week so I may try it and let you know.

Im not trying to run it off the ipod just wanted to load the cdrom iso images at boot so I could install it onto my ibook. I ran out of CDR`s and was trying to save some pennies :)

Sorry if I was not clear in my respone or if I'm not understanding you now, but to the best of my knowledge, and I have tried to use a usb device "at boot" on a mac, It doesn't work because your ibook doesn't "see" the usb device(s) until OS X has actually started loading. Re-reading your post above I believe you want to use your ipod as a substitute cd-rom, but for the same reason-late loading of the usb system-it's not possible.

While your ipod isn't recommended as a boot device perhaps the 1st link will help.
