ipw2200.sourceforge.net//INSTALL

and believe i have done everything correctly, however on bootup im getting an error saying that eth1 device (being the Intel card) could not be found.
When i do dmesg i have the following error

ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.0.3
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:02:07.0[A] -> GSI 4 (level, low) -> IRQ 4
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
divert: allocating divert_blk for eth1
ipw2200: ipw-2.2-boot.fw load failed: Reason -2
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: 0xFFFFFFFE
divert: freeing divert_blk for eth1
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:07.0 failed with error -5

Now i have done the installation mentioned above quite a few times. However one thing i am presuming is that the card itself is not on. The light for the wireless card is off and the only button i have as an on/off switch on the laptop doesnt seem to turn it on. Is there any way to actually turn the wireless card on without using that button, configuring linux to catch the interrupt that key fires off?

The reason why im insisting on the above being the issue is because i have followed the installation instructions so many times that im sure i have done them correctly. My friend who has the same card yet a HP laptop has got his working but cant figure out mine either.

One thing i should mention is that the network properties shows the eth1 interface as an ethernet interface yet it has named it a Intel 2200 BG Wireless card which is weird. When i try to activate it, the same "device not found" message comes up.

I also tried that, then I cleaned up all according to the uninstall instructions and installed the kernelmodule and firmware from atrpms, has worked ever since.

I am having the same problem. I was able to set up the wireless card so it is on during boot by going into the BIOS and changing the "set default wireless device" setting...it was set to none. Now when I boot up Windows the wireless card is already on. However, I am having the same problems as you when launching FC3 on the same machine. I get the same error message in the startup log as you mentioned above. When I go through the gui to activate it I get "device not found" and it is shown as an ethernet interface.

Have you had any luck getting it to work...?

You can install via yum. (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=56694)

I noted on my Tecra M2 laptop that the switch that turns the centrino wireless on and off must be on when the sytsem boots into FC3. If I turn that switch off after FC3 is booted the system hangs. If the switch on your laptop is a momentary switch (ie does not have a on and off position) you might try hitting the switch during the initial boot up screen. I suspect that after boot up hitting the switch does not turn the wireless card on so that the OS sees it.

As the other poster suggested check your bios settings to see if you can set it to always be on.

Well i can say i got the card working. I did a complete re install of fedora core 3 and re installed it and it suddenly worked fine. Im possible thinking that it was the firmware i had incorrectly downloaded. You need to make sure you have the firmware that suits the dirver version you download and put it in /lib/firmware.

Now to get my asus keys working with the acpi grrr!!!! Just downloaded fedora core 4, hopefully that will fix it
