I've just installed FC4 (then re-installed it to enable c++) but I'm having a problem getting the modem to work. I'm a bit of a newbie but I learned a few things do a computer course at uni so I can usually guess the meaning the instructions I follow.

I first followed this guide (http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/fedora/index.html).

The table says Britain uses both PPPoE or PPPoA, I've checked freeserve/wanadoo's site and they use the latter.

I'm using version 0.00 of the modem.

chap-secrets, I've seen some other guides say use no quotes but I used them, that doesn't (logically) seem to be the source of the problem.

That guide didn't work...

So I tried this guide (http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/SpeedTouchUSBLinux.php).

The first it tells me is to delete speedtch.o, which can be found with $find /lib/modules/ -name speedtch.o
That command gives no output, I had a quick look manually and the file doesn't appear to be there. Other than this, I followed the tutorial exactly.

In /etc/resolv.conf - should the two lines begin with "nameserver" or am I supposed to substitute it for something? I've replaced the two ips in the tutorial with those listed by my ISP.

When I run /root/startadsl& I get:
"I'm sorry, I didn't find your ADSL modem"
"...check /proc/bus/usb/devices"
"SIOCADDRT: No such device"

When the modem is NOT connected I get 4 things listed in the file, these appear to match the results of Hardware Browser. However when the modem is connected a 5th is listed, this is definately the modem - it gives the manufacturer as ALCATEL and product as Spped Touch USB. However the modem is NOT listed under USB in Hardware Browser but THREE identical lines appear under Hardware Browser > System - is that normal?

I can't give the listing as my XP machine doesn't have a floppy drive and I don't know how to burn a cd in linux (yet...). If it's really important I could write it down and reproduce it (or try blind typing it - I've only got one monitor at the moment.)

If I run each line in startadsl seperately it the line:
/usr/local/bin/modem_run -f /root/mgmt/mgmt.o -m
that can't find the modem.

and the line:
/sbin/route add default ppp0
that says No such device.

After running /root/startadsl, the pppd.log file contains:
using channel 13
Using interface ppp0
Connect#: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xaef62bf9>]
Modem hangup
Connection terminated
Script /usr/local/bin/pppoa2 -vpi 0 -vci 38 finished (pid 3709), status = 0xff

Having browser the internet for answers, I ran adsl-setup (I didn't really unserstand it). But having finished that I ran /sbin/ifup ppp0 which produced the output:
/sbin/adsl-start: line 215:3214 Terminated $ CONNECT "$@" > /dev/null 2 >& 1

Somewhere in the middle of doing all that I ran the Internet Configuration Wizard:
I Select XDSL Connection but after that I'm a bit stuck, I could see an Adapter that seemed to match what I've got.

I did find someone else with the same problem (I've lost the link now though) and someone suggested that maybe he didn't have USB support.

Anyone got an ideas, I've seen loads of other posts on this subject but none have offered a solution to my problem, your help would be greatly appreciated.

The story continues...

I found http://www.japarker.btinternet.co.uk/speedtouch/, followed that but it tells me that the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem has only been made to work with 2.4 and 2.2.18 kernels.

Does this mean it'll never work with FC4?

I've had the same problems! With exactly the same modem.

I eventually just used my eth0 (NIC) port (instead of USB) and set it to obtain an ip address automatically. It works that way....but I had to pre-configure the settings on the modem in Windows first.

After that, every time I start up FC4 it automatically brins up eth0 and I'm automatically connected to the internet.

Hi all,

I had the same problem just a few months ago and the instructions and script that finally worked for me are those on http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/

That worked "almost" perfectly for FC3 but now i want to install FC4 and have no idea if it will work there... if it doesn't i won't even bother to install FC4... if any of you follow the instructions placed on the link mentioned before and get it to work please post it here...

Thanks all...
