To Whom who can help

I've just installed FedoraCore4 linux box with NIS client and Gnome Desktop.
Our NIS server is on the IBM box runing AIX 5.1 with ksh as a default shell.
User's home directory is a softlink from autofs using auto.net
(ie ln -s /net/ibmserver/home/people /home/people )

When a user log on to the FC4 box, the .profile didn't read so all the remote applications from the IBM box couldn't run because all the PATH and variables are not available.
The PATH variable appeared to be a default local PATH only.

If the user do su - <user> again, then the .profile is read ok. and all the PATH and env are correct.

Has anyone had similar experience on this problem and
How do you overcome it.

Your suggestions and replies are very much appreciate.

Kindly Regards
