cdrom won't play

I have a liteon cdrom which is linked to hdc ok and a chmod 666
I can rip tracks from the cd and play them from the hdd but cannot hear
anything from the cd with cdplay or the gui...The drive opens and closes on command and also spins on play but no sound comes out..The mixer
is set to full but no joy...Any help appreciated.
ps I have tried as a user also as root but same applies

Ya probably need to hook up the cable that goes from your cdrom to your sound card.

The cd is connected and it plays ok in both Mandrake and Debian
which are on the same drive...However...
I upgraded kde to the latest beta version and all is ok now...
