How do i give my linux computer a name?

I know in windows xp you just go to the computer properties and put in a decription, name and workgroup but i don't know how to do that in linux.

I think it might have something to do with the dns or host or localhost.localdomain but i'm not exactly sure so can someone please help me understand this.

What did you call it when you installed the OS? Login and type hostname -a and see what it says.

You can also set it using the hostname command: hostname computername.yourdomain.com

Be aware that the system name is stored in other places as well, so you may need to edit some config files.

Just call it "Bob" or something every time you refer to it.

It should get the jist after a while.

For example, my daughter knows full well the difference between Daddy's Computer, Daddy's Laptop and Mummy's Laptop. But she hasn't a clue what saturn, europa and ios are!

It seems liek it worked, it was a risk though trying it but it worked, i just went to the network app under the system settings and changed it from localhost.localdomain to hal9000.matrix.linux

A Post-It note stuck on the front will survive most reboots, but for a real permanent solution you can engrave the name in a metal part of the case.
