I have recently reinstalled FC4 on my laptop and am trying to get the network working. I have a cable modem running through a router running dhcp. I have no problems getting on using this machine with xp (dual boot), but FC4 fails at ethernet initialization during boot. I have tried manually inputting DNS entries, bringing eth down then up, restarting networking services...

The only time I am able to activate eth1 (eth0 is wireless and is set to manually activate) is if I assign a static, which won't get me on the network. I ran into this in my initial installation and got frustrated filtering through forums for answers that didn't work so I installed OpenSuSe 10, same problem plus sound issues, so I went back to FC and am determined to get it working.

I hope someone can give me some good advice here. I also have sound problems, and I haven't looked at wireless connectivity yet, one problem at a time...

FC correctly identifies my NIC, loopback ping works, but nothing else. I will try to provide any information requested as quickly as possible. Thanks in advance for any help you provide.

I've tried a few other things and still no luck. I read another post and saw something about it making a difference if you install with the network cable plugged in, and booting with it in rather than not. I unplugged everything during the installation because the usb mouse was causing the installation to hang, so I unplugged everything to avoid problems.

Would that make a difference? Also, in making changes to the configuration on the network controller I went to restart the network services. Which wouldn't work. Could not stop or start network services. I also tried to restart netplugd which wouldn't restart either. Is this something that is getting set in boot and perhaps disabled? I noticed that when I shutdown and brought the system up again later I got plenty of activity on my router but the system still failed to activate the ethernet controller.

Frustrated here, any help would be appreciated.
