New install "Alert"

I installed for the first time a Linux OS in 15 years! Back then I tried it but couldn't get very far installing it!

Lately, I tried to install Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS,PUP: but they all failed for some reason to connect to my Wireless Network and Internet.
So Yesterday I tried Fedora12 and it was a breeze to install and to make everything work without lifting a finger... the only thing I was asked for is to supply my Wireless Security KEY...
Installed on 3 different Pcs the same: Intel as well as AMD
So I guess it is going to be Fedora!

After the install I went for the Updates and there were 299M of updates... some didn't work at first but Itried a few combinations (installing the biiggest ones first and so on... finally I got them all!): My question here is: Do I need all those updates? or are they just updates for stuff which came with the Distro, and not necesseraly things which are active such as applications?
How do I know what is really needed?

Every time I boot, after the updates, I get the following Security Alert which I don' know what to make of it:

Any idea why and what should I do?

Question #3: Is there a way of editing/changing the SuperUser/Admin. Key short of reinstalling?

Question #4: Is there a way to change/edit the time delay (3sec. to something longer 15-20sec.)) before boot?easy way?

All sound stuck on paused

Every sound program on my computer is stuck paused, it seems that it will not initiate playing of even a .wav file with mplayer. I am using a Creative X-FI card, and it it found in the sound preferences, and i checked pulseaudio and alsa to make sure that they were not muted. Any ideas?

Doing some looking, it seems that I might need help getting the
options snd_hda_intel model=

option set right in my /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file. Where do we look this up?

Ethernet controller was not detected(enabled) during installation

Goo day! I have a question.
My ethernet controller was not detected during installation from DVD. Later, after reboot it was detected, but did not start automatically. I fixed it. lspci says my ethernet controller is:

Musical boot

I haven't seen any Linux distributions that provide a musical boot, one where the boot process would be accompanied by some rousing music. However, this seems like such an obvious stupid-Linux-trick that I'm sure someone has done it. I don't crave a musical boot or login screen, but it would be nicer than those Gnome "Boink!"s.

Fedora 12 on PPC Ibook G3 - installed, but with problems

I'm a debian and ubuntu fan. But they don't support the iBook very well out of the box. So I figured I'd give fedora a try. A grabbed an the disk Fedora-12-ppc-disc1.iso that I downloaded from
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...Fedora/ppc/iso. But, this installed a basic linux install with no GUI. That wouldn't be that big of deal if yum worked.

Either I need pointed towards a better installation disk that includes a functional X. (preferred) and hopefully yum, or I need to resolve my yum error.

I've googled around and tried some of the tips offered there. I've verified my network is up and I'm not using a proxy. I've tried a few things that include modifying files in the /etc/yum.repos.d files by removing the # before the line beginning with mirror, and placing a # before the line beginning with baseurl, and changing enabled=1 etc.

I am installing fedora 12 on my laptop. In order to do so I am following the perfect desktop howto.
Why does this command not work:

How to see ext3 partition in windows 7

My laptop is Acer Aspire 5739G (Intel T9600 -- 4GB ram - Nvidia GT240)
When i boot my note book using fedora 12 x64 live cd after selecting Boot in CD menu
I just get a black screen
I test the cd on my Desktop and there were no problem
What should i do?

I'm kind of new to Linux and yesterday I installed fedora 12. I got this HP printer that I want to use, so I started googling how to install a printer, but basically everything I found was on a pretty high level and a bit confusing to me, or they were old solutions.

So please could someone here make me some kind of new user guide so I can install this printer, it's very important to me to get this to work so please help me out.

mySQL?

Hello!

I'm kind of new to Linux, and I chose to install fedora 12, that went great. I'm also studying to become an IT-engineer.

Right now I'm going a course in Databases and we are doing a lot of mySQL. In school we are using mySQL query browser and if we want, we can work in the terminal, I would like to get both these ways to work at home too.

And another thing, do I need the mySQL administrator too or is it optional?

Also is the mySQL workbench better and if so, maybe I can use that instead because my teacher said that it's fine too but they can't use it in school because there they run fedora 11. (though I prefer if I can have mySQL query browser since that is what we use in school)

So, basically I've tried to google it but I just can't find the right stuff, I would like to know if I can just write something in the terminal like "yum install mysql" and get these things?

Running Multiple Displays with Different Videocards

See, I've been getting at this one for days and I've had no avail so far. I've tried manually editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get three displays working and running twinview + 1.

The problem is that I have an ATi card and a nVidia card running together. You can't install the 'regular' drivers for each because they conflict at a software level. So, I suppose that I'm asking is there anyway that I can get my hardware working together so I can have my three screens working?

I'd like to do something like this:
[nVidia Monitor][ATi Monitor][nVidia Monitor]

Problem installing Promise SATA300-TX4 Card

hi all

i am a bit new to fedora (and linux) and i want to install this card (Promise SATA300-TX4) to my pc. I am running F12 x86_64. I searched already in the forum but it doesnt really helped.

I downloaded the driver and in the readme stands a list of the supported kernel versions:
RedHat 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10
RedHat 7.3 kernel 2.4.18-3
RedHat 8.0 kernel 2.4.18-14
RedHat 9 kernel 2.4.20-8
SuSE 7.3 kernel 2.4.10
SuSE 8.0 kernel 2.4.18
SuSE 8.1 kernel 2.4.19
SuSE 8.2 kernel 2.4.20
SuSE 9.0 kernel 2.4.21-99
N/A kernel 2.4.x (kernel compiled by yourself)

How can i look up if my kernel has the right version?. I think i have Version 2.6.31.5 (cat /proc/version).

6. Load the driver module.

#insmod ulsata2

I dont know how to to 4. to 6. Has anyone experience with this card (already installed it) and is able to help me here?.

All of wallpaper not showing, hidden by panel

I downloaded a really nice wallpaper and stuck it on my desktop. However, not all of it is showing. Some of it is hidden by my panel. How do I get it to show all, yet still leave the panel untouched?

When I was using Fedora Core 8, the Java installation would not work with my employer's VPN connection method through their website. When it came time to run a java applet to configure, it would just say "applet not started". Game over.

Now with Fedore Core 12, it attempts to run the applet and even gives me a little dialog that the applet displays, but then it promptly crashes Firefox and wants to submit a bug report. I guess that's progress? :-/
