How would we go about switching themes manually? Is that even possible?
p.s. Excellent howto... thanks.
Hi everyone
Not sure of I need to start a new thread for this... (so be kind if I am in trouble.. ;) )
Has anyone had any luck resolving the 'blue screen' ( also known as 'outlines and shadows, but who stole the cheese?') problems mentioned in this thread?
(aiglx under FC5)
... could post current package set, kernel version and xorg.conf if anyone is interested, but it looks just like the howtos suggest it should...
Have upped and downed resolutions, but all I have gotten for my trouble was a brittle firefox...
Help, ..anyone..?? :)
hi guyz..
actually, i've been searching for more than a week for a ready RPM for CGWD..
i'va managed to find a ready RPM for gcomizthemer.. it open but i cant apply any theme there.. and i dont know why..
can any one link me with a ready RPM for CGWD..??? this will be appreciated..
you may find gcompizthemer and cgwdthemes at: http://chodus.xxl-web.pl/linux/compiz.php ....
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease if any one successed in installing themes and applying any theme with the extention ".cgwdtheme" to tell us how..
I don't know what's going on, I followed the steps word for word, all is working greate 3D / DRI, compiz is installed and everything else needed from the aiglx repo, however eventhough everything is there, still that "desktop-effects" command is no where to be found so what could be missing here ?
Thanks
Tuxic
System-> Preferences-> More Preferences-> Desktop Effects
Well that's not true for me, and besides if the terminal can't identify the command, how on earth is it going to be in the gnome menu while it's not in /usr/bin or the other usual diectories in my $PATH variable. (Well there is one way, if the executable was place din a directory outside my $PATH but I highly doubt that)Quote:

I am sorry I in no way meant to be rude or anything, it's just that I have been trying to get AIGLX support since it was released, and now that I figured how to get the i810 driver to support my Intel 950 card I thought I am not to run int any further issues, I guess I was wrong, oh well what doesn't kill your system can always teach you something new :)Quote:

Firewing1
Is this core 5 or core 6 ? I had AIGLX working in core 5 a while back and in core 6 it doesn't work for me. XGL on the other hand works on core 6 with D855GM drivers
grepping 'compiz' didn't get any results, greppig 'bin' just returned :Quote:

Jim, I am using 5.

when i started in fc5 with aiglx your right, there isnt a "desktop effects " command or menu opton
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Render...ht=%28aiglx%29
the ability to turn it on or off is with a script I posted on the above link
OK I still can't get things to work on my laptop yet so I went ahead and tried it on my desktop running fedora core 5.
After installing the needed packages from the development and aiglx repos, I went ahead and enabled compiz and executed the desktop-effects command, compiz runs and aiglx is all OK cube and wobble effects are good, but my gnome panel's start icon causes an error and I get a message saying that the 'start_here' icon can't be found and if I would like to remove it !! So I thought that since I updated some packages from the development repo, maybe I need to remove that main menu icon and add the new one from the new 'Add Applet" menu. perhaps it will have updated pointers.
The above caused my gnome-panel to fail.
Now if I ever try to start the gnome-panel I ge the following :
What would be the fix ?Code:$ gnome-panel
gnome-panel: symbol lookup error: gnome-panel: undefined symbol: gtk_recent_manager_get_default
Thanks
Tuxic
It looks like you either need to do yum updates or run 'ldconfig' as root

Never mind, I went ahead and did a :
code]yum -y --enablerepo=development --enablerepo=development-extras update gnome-*[/code]
Not only that fixed my problems, it also as expected gave me all those new gui updates from Fedora core 6 too :D I am a happy kamper at the moment, I am using Fedora Core 5 and at the same time have all the Core 6's eye-candy :)
However I still need to fix that compiz issue on my laptop :(

Hi,
did anybody manage to bring compiz to life without upgrading to FC6 packages? A "yum --enablerepo=development --enablerepo=development-extras update compiz" wants to download 194 MB of packages, and right now I'm not in the mood to update my glibc just because of compiz.
At the moment I don't have "desktop-effects" and X crashes after I execute "gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool true".
Firewing,
Thanks for the post in getting this working. I have been playing around with FC6 test 3 and I decided to give your guide a shot and it worked flawlessly. Pretty cool graphical effects. Now just to figure out what everything is and choose which things I like,
Nice work!
Thanks! Just a tip - If you're using Xgl, some apps may stop working and some will stop in both cases, like GUI Java ones. In that case, you need to run them in Xnest...
Firewing1
After I first got it to run, there was only one pitfall, it was the gnome-panel it had issues with applets that have been there before, so I did a :Quote:

So for the moment I am using alsamixer to do the job.Code:$ gnome-volume-control
gnome-volume-control: symbol lookup error: gnome-volume-control: undefined symbol: __gst_debug_min
2- Even though the eye candy is still working good, however compiz is having a little issue
afterwards, now I have black lines surrounding my compiz windows it's a bit annoying.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3728/screenshotzo6.png
I am playing around like that with my secondary machine because I am going to upgrade it to Fedora Core 6 anyways so might as will get a good taste of AIGLX until 6 is out of beta, on the other hand my laptop is my primary machine, and I won't upgrade it from Fedora Core 5 to 6 until the Spring semester, I have made it a habit to not switch / Upgrade OS's on my main machine during a school semester as I have no idea what kind of surprises might show up (compatibility, package unavailability, hardware support ...etc ) .
So I still need to fix compiz on my laptop and I don't know what to do next with the *-sharp packages issue (they are installed however yum still asks for them and I don't know what to do)
You can update gstreamer to fix the gnome volume applet.

Some of them, because my mouse is only 3-button mouse, do not work unless I re-assign the keys, and off course I canot do AIGLX on my vidoe board, yet :(
I should have noted in post #184 above.....that I was using GLX and Nvidia and that is working fine.
I attempted to set up AIGLX using my laptop, running FC5 with an ATI Mobility 300 card and it pretty much screwed up the system so bad that I am reinstalling the OS because no matter what I do, I cannot get a desktop to come back. I've restored so many /etc/X11 files to try to recover this sytem, but it's all to no avail.
With my laptop, when FC5 loads it uses the "radeon" driver. When I attempt to install the ATI driver via Livna then I cannot get the GUI to start using the fglrx driver
When I install aiglx following the above instructions, it loads just fine...but none of the effects work. I assume that is because I don't actually have the necessary 3D support from the native "radeon" driver for this card. I've wasted at least 10 hours trying to get this working.....while my Nvidia set up took just over 5 minutes :(
I'm so tired of ATI cards and Linux.....but so many laptops use the ATI cards and my work purchases Dell laptops so that is what I have to deal with.
For now, yes, but I think the ATi/AMD ordeal will help these type of issues out later, seeing as (hopefully) the driver quality etc will increase.

Like many, I suspect, Linux users, I cannot leave a working system alone.
I had compiz working based mostly on Firewing1 reccomendation. :)
Then to try compiz-quinn uninstalled compiz and installed compiz-quinn packages from http://www.illawarra.org/linux/fedora/5/x86_64/. All the packages installed without a hitch. Then when I logged off, the logon screen would not come back on with the message to the effect that xserver is not set up correctly. After that I had to use startx to get back in xwindows, off course XGL IS disabled at this point
Obviously I missed a crucial set up step.
What did I miss? Can anyone help?
yum is very slow in my home!what can i do ?
Your installation instructions, as usual, were very helpful.Quote:

All of this pales in comparison to the final installment of grief. Two days ago the system locked up and I did a hard reboot. After logging in the screen came up with the usual appearance, but without the panel at the bottom which has the applications "f" button and the browser, spreadsheet, and printer icons, etc. I have since disabled xgl and hope updates or some fix will cure this. I really liked the look of XGL.
Are you in Gnome or KDE?
Firewing1
I've been enjoying compiz on XGL on a few machines with Nvidia cards - it's running great. However I like the aiglx paradigm and have an laptop with an Intel graphics chipset. I'm close to getting it going, but am not quite there.
All the latests packaged seem to install fine, however on enabling the compositor in metacity, the windows flash a number of times and then borders disappear only to be replaced after switching the compositor off and restarting metacity. That said, it appears that compositing is working great when trying xcompmgr as well as the trying glxgears - performance is solid.
I heard rumor that this could be the result of having previously attempted an install of XGL on the system? Does anyone have any experience with this? I've tried a --replacepkgs option when installing all the aiglx rpms with the same effect. xorg.conf and other files look right...
Any suggestions to chase down would greatly appreciated.
Sorry, to have bothered you.Quote:

I have, it didn't work out so well...
As for compiz-quinn - It's also available from the repo I use. A simple:Replaced the 'normal' compiz with compiz-quinn.Code:rpm -e compiz;yum install --enablerepo=fedora-xgl install compiz-quinn
Firewing1
so i do we get these themes in use? or installed?
Not sure if you were refering to my post, but I am in Gnome. I've tried it again, and although I have the "f" panel back with the icons etc., it still locks up. I'm going to be leaving XGL alone for awhile because after the hard reboot mentioned earlier something bummed out a few files dealing with with /etc/rc5.d and /etc/rc6.d (looks like a bad link). Very slow startup and shutdown. Got to deal with that first.Quote:

There is more on the site than compiz-quinn. I installed all that was there.Code:yum install --enablerepo=fedora-xgl install compiz-quinn
maybe that is why i did not have any dependency problems ( i.e. bdbus*).
After installation combination of CSM & gset-compiz & cgwd-themes will allow the use/configuration of themes and plugins.Quote:

Hi
I cant get XGL to work on FC5 here. Got FGLRX with x1900XT here. I followed the guid in post one, but when i restart the server, it cant boot X. I just get to configure it, then it just shows me a clean background, with a cursor on it. Nothing i can do (seems to me at least).
Have to disable xgl again to get back into X. Oh, yeah, i have edited the timeout thing for my ATI card. Any ideas? I didn't read all posts in this thread, so if there is answer for me in this thread, please tell me the page or post number :)
Hi all,
I have made a script that allow to have the choice in GDM to start a Gnome session with or without Xgl.
You can download it at http://nicofo.tuxfamily.org/scripts/...age_GDM.tar.gz and find instructions here (french) + photos.
Summury :
- simply run as root the script : configureXgl.
- Xgl must be installed (do it from fedora-xgl repository, but don't activate xgl (with gnome-xgl-switch). If already done, no problem : the script 'configureXgl' will ask you to deactivate it)
- restart X ==> you will have a "GNOME Accelerated with Xgl" and a "Normal Gnome" session available (see image - clic to enlarge).
http://nicofo.tuxfamily.org/dotclear...s/GDM_xglP.jpg
ADVANTAGES
- GDM is launched normally (with X and not XGL) so that you can choose if you start a gnome session with or without XGL
- Great advantage with ATI videocards : because GDM is launched normally, you don't need anymore to add the option "GdmXserverTimeout=60" in your /etc/gdm/custom.conf. Now, GDM + xgl/gnome session start as rapidly as non xgl session !
==> no loss of time anymoreQuote:

Hallo,
the tutorial does not work for me. The line:
yum install --enablerepo=fedora-xgl xorg-x11-server-Xgl xgl-hardware-list gset-compiz compiz
returns some error:
Error: Missing Dependency: fedora-xgl-settings is needed by package compiz
So i searched this forum and found a mirror for fedora-xgl-settings and tried to install it manually:
rpm -i fedora-xgl-settings-0.0.1-2.noarch.rpm
Fehler: Fehlgeschlagende Abhängigkeiten:
xgl-hardware-list wird benötigt von fedora-xgl-settings-0.0.1-2.noarch
yum install --enablerepo=fedora-xgl xgl-hardware-list returns:
No Match for argument: xgl-hardware-list
Nothing to do
Try:But just a hint, Xgl replaces the Xorg server, which can cause a few problems and glitches as AIGLX does not. Because the new Beta drivers have support for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, I'd try using those. If you'd like to wait about half an hour, I can post binary RPMS for the Beta drivers so you don't need any extra work.Code:yum install --enablerepo=fedora-xgl xorg-x11-server-Xgl xgl-hardware-list gset-compiz compiz
Firewing1
** Please see my post here for grabbing the binary RPMS for the nVidia beta driver. They're based off the Livna ones, but built against 1.0-9625 **
Once you have those installed, just erase Xgl:(keeping gset-compiz because it also works with Fedora's compiz) and install the Fedora compiz:Code:rpm -e xorg-x11-server-Xgl xgl-hardware-list compiz
'desktop-effects' enables/disabled AIGLX.Code:yum install compiz
Firewing1
I am nearly done with this except one error at the end and I don't seem to have desktop-effects any more, when I try to install compiz under the AIGLX section
Transaction Check Error: package compiz-1.0.0-4 (which is newer than compiz-0.0.13-0.25.20060817git.fc6) is already installed
and I removed all compiz before I bagan. Or am I confused and I can only do one or the other XGL or AIGLX? I really want to see what the excitment is about, I am useing fc6 t3 and the beta nvidia drivers and have modied xorg.conf as suggested.
desktop-effects doesnt work for me actually, i get a "command not found" error... :(
EDIT: and when i type: "gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool true" all i get is purple screen... :(
Yes, you can only use one and the only one that has desktop-effects is the Fedora one - Just remove XGL's compiz:and install Fedora's:Code:rpm -e compiz
Firewing1Code:yum --disablerepo=fedora-xgl install compiz
i'm not using the XGL one :S
ok - where does one get the "fedora" compiz - when using FC5 and the new nvidia driver?
Just a silly question (not using fc6-test at all yet)..
:)
I have had a go at recompiling the sources from the FC6 version but get stuffed at it not compiling the gnome extensions.. mm.m..
Well, you can use the AIGLX repo but AFAIK it doesn't work with the nVidia beta drivers - You have to use the development repos which will basically pull your system to FC6T3 level.Quote:

ok Firewing, where are the repos? im going to upgrade to FC6 imidietly at release anyway so might as well **** up my system now ;)
fglrx (ATi's drivers) don't support GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, so unless you use Xgl you can't get compiz working, as you described above. You CAN, however, use the open Mesa DRI which IMHO works just as well and just as fast, and it will support AIGLX. Simply make sure Load "dri" and Load "glx" are in your xorg.conf.Quote:

1. My refresh rate seems to ignore the refresh rate i set it. It shows a couple refresh rates in the 50's in the screen resolution, i edited xorg.conf to force it to 60 and my monitor currently ignoring everything and is at 75. sigh
2. The effects work, but when enabled, neither metacity or compiz work aka no titlebar.
2 problems
1. firewing1's nvidia beta drivers that I installed, I cant set my refresh rate, it ignores both the settings program for refreshrate and manually adding it in xorg.conf.
2. When I enable the effects, I have a windows working with effects, but the titlebar goes missing.
it says this in terminal
Code:compiz: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
compiz: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
compiz: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
compiz: water: GL_ARB_fragment_program is missing
make sure this is in your xorg.conf:And this in your "Device" section:Code:Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite"
EndSection
Section "DRI"
Group 0
Mode 0666
EndSection
Firewing1Code:Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
ah i think im missing the option for the device. I'll try that and see if that's it.
EDIT: Yep that was it, was missing that option under device. :D Finally got it working and it's awesome :D
all that's left is my refresh problem :o
EDIT 2: lol, did not noice the nvidia control panel, refreshrate fixed. Man I'm an idiot.
I have had my share of difficulty getting XGL-Compiz-Nvidia to work but nothing that can't be overcome if one tries hard enough and your harware supports it.
I originally got eveything running on a PIV dual core 1Gig RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 7300 pci-express 256 MB DDR2 running FC5.
Then being a "glutton for punishment" I wondered if I could get the XGL-Cube thingy running on a older (1998 vintage) H-P desktop. This box is running a recent install of FC5 Re-Spin and used Firewing1's advice and script to get FC6 developement release.
I went to the Nvidia site and downloaded the latest beta driver and installed it and every thing went well.
Some specs on this box: PIII 550MHz 512MB RAM Nvidia GeForce 6200 AGP 2X 256 MB memory.
Here's what I get when I run "glxinfo" from a terminal.
