Next release of Yellow Dog Linux based on Fedora

I just found out that the next release of Yellow Dog Linux for PPC will be based on Fedora, and will be available in both 32bit and 64bit versions.

Interesting - but then Fedora already incoporates YUM. So I guess it makes sense really.

can you set a custom user status so instead of
'Administrator' you could be 'spammer' :p

Ug 2004-04-12 04:42 AM CDT

Yes, i could - but I'm not. I like to think that i'm professional enough to restrain myself from such antics. :p

Mind you, there was a time not long ago when you posted far more than me.

In an effort to get this thread on topic, I think it is very appropriate, since yum is the Yellow dog updater, modified. :D

It's only fair, we borrowed their updater, they get most of our software. Horray for free software!

I always thought that Yellow Dog was a Red Hat based distro anyway.

I was planning on using YDL on my PPC9600/200 that bens upgraded to a g4 400mhz daughtercard, but their **OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED* hardware list says these cards are NOT supported....

Im so bummed...OS X doesnt support it..**officially** and now I cant even use YDL....

dang...

It is, but the previous release (3.0.1) was based on Red Hat 8.0. It's nice that they skipped RH9 and went straight to Fedora for the basis of their next release. It would be nice if I could work out my problem that I've had trying to get Fedora PPC working on my PowerBook though :( , since it's going to be the end of May before the next Yellow Dog is released.

May's not that far off now though. Its probably best to wait.

I think YellowDog was originally a redhat "mod" for lack of a better word, that was specifically designed for macs. To the best of my recollection (been a while since i read mac magazines) ydl was supposed to run better off the mac chip architecture and hardware configs than redhat. It also had the ability to run ontop of the Mac os, kinda like a os inside a os. I think it was the first one to do that, but im not sure. Thats my understanding anyway.

BTW, love the top 25 posters, 1000+, 600+. then you get down into the 200s, thats great. By the way, Ug, i liked your sig better when it proclaimed you to be the biggest spammer on the board. Whatever floats your boat though.

Couldn't you run Linux from inside Windows first? I just assumed it went that way. God knows why - your probably right though.

This one's more accurate though - and yes it does float my boat. I put a lot of effort into this place. ;) And I still have a life amazingly!
