    Arrow GIMP 2.4.0-rc3 leaves trails

    SITUATION/411:
    GIMP 2.4.0-rc3 leaves mouse tracks (trails of little green circles) on canvas with mouse movement regardless of clicking buttons.

    See illustration below.

    SIZE-UP:
    Make & Model=HP Pavilion ze5170
    CPU=P4
    HDD=20G
    RAM=1024
    NIC=McPhyter
    Wireless=Prism54
    Video=ATi Radeon Mobility M6 LY
    Display=Generic LCD 1024 X 768
    Operating system version=F8 test 3 7.92 Rawhide
    Running Kernel=2.6.23-6.fc8

    MITIGATING FACTORS:
    Only occurs when a drawing or painting tool is active.
    Selection tools work normally.

    QTBAs:
    1) Has anybody else encountered this problem?
    2) Is it ATi/Readeon/Mobility M6 specific?

    Thanks!

    Dan

    I'd be willing to bet money this is your problem.

    Wouldn't be a bit surprised, It's not the sharpest knife in the laundry basket. Except every release until now has worked splendidly.

    Have you got the latest version from koji ( its one version higher and may have been fixed )? ( I haven't had any trouble with gimp )

    Code:
    su
    wget http://koji.fedoraproject.org/packages/gimp/2.4.0/0.rc3.2.fc8/i386/gimp-2.4.0-0.rc3.2.fc8.i386.rpm
    wget http://koji.fedoraproject.org/packages/gimp/2.4.0/0.rc3.2.fc8/i386/gimp-libs-2.4.0-0.rc3.2.fc8.i386.rpm

    Morning Dan,
    I've just looked at the situation in Gimp 2.4.0-rc3 as packaged for SAM, running on my laptop with Intel chipsets. All behaving normally.
    To get the right answer, one must first ask the right question!

    Top o' the mornin' to ya, Leigh!

    Not yet. Thanks for the links. I'll grab those packages later today.

    Morning, to you too , John.

    Aw crud! I was afraid of that. Strictly unintentional, but they're gradually obsoleting my old laptop. Not that it wasn't deserved with the likes of the ALi PATA drivers, Mobility M6 video and cheesy USB 1.1 ports. Just gonna be expensive to replace. <....>

    Dang!

    Nope. Thanks for the links! It installed flawlessly, but is still broken. I'm having nightmares that the F8 Radeon driver isn't going to support the Mobility M6 LY well enough to use the GIMP. That's a bad thing. A show stopper for F8 on that laptop in fact.

    It's an addiction. I gotta have my GIMP! <....>

    UPDATE:

    This same bug also exists in the new version of Ubuntu! (7.10) Symptoms are exactly the same.

    Hmm, how odd... Any allusions to this bug in the GIMP's bug tracker?

    *Smacks forehead!*

    Yoiks! Aw, dangit! I was going to go post this over there when I found out it was in the brown 'buntu as well! Most likely a GIMP issue, not a driver bug! Then I got sidetracked by other stuff!

    Back in a while, guys! Thanks Thetargos!

    It ,might actually be GDK and the combination of the drivers... To rule out, have you tried with the vesa/vga/ati/radeon/fglrx drivers and see how do they behave? I'd expect that ati/vga/vesa wouldn't have issues while radeon/radeonhd/fglrx (i.e the accelerated ones) might show the issues... Maybe worth a try.
