Question Compiz problem

When I use Compiz and AIGLX, everything works fine for a while. However after some time, the window border will go blank for all my windows. As in, there's no title, no close, minimise buttons. When I try to switch Desktop Effects off, my entire system blanks out and hangs. I've noticed this problem with F7 and FC6. Could anyone tell me what the problem is?

Hmm. I suspect it's a kernel issue. I ran Compiz over the past year on FC6 without any problems. It was only after upgrading to the 2952 kernel that the problem surfaced.

I have this problem as well. If I try to disable desktop effects the system hangs! This is includes whenever I log out. The system completely hangs at log out.

Exactly the same problem here. Using FC6 x86_64. Compiz has been working great over the last months.
A few days ago did an updated, including kernel 2952 and corresponding nVidia kmod. Now I have
all the problems described here (windows borders disappear, computer hangs on logout, etc.).

In addition to the problems posted above, anyone logged in and had nothing but a mouse and a desktop background?

Compiz/Beryl worked reasonably on FC6.
After upgrading to FC7, I had to uninstall all of beryl before I could "startx."
i will wait a while before I install it, or any of its derivatives.

yes .. to fix this switch to a vt and kill esd .. see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=238680
for more information.
disable esd after login to prevent this from happing again.

@compiz problem:
this is a gtk-window-decorator bug in compiz-0.3.6 its fixed upstream (0.4.0 & 0.5.0) but none of this versions are in fedora yet (0.4.0 is in rawhide)

I'm afraid I do not know what a vt is. Could someone please explain that?

This bug seems to apply only to systems using system sounds, I am not. So I am not sure if this is a relevant bug.

I did manage to get the system to boot correctly. I booted to runlevel 3, logged in as root, and removed compiz. The system booted the same way. Booted to runlevel 3 again and removed kmod-nvidia, then reinstalled it. Now I can boot and get a normal desktop.

I am not going to mess with desktop effects software again for a couple of months though.

I still have with beryl, even with the newest kernel (2.6.21-1.3228.fc7) and nvidia (kmod-nvidia-100.14.09-1.2.6.21_1.3228.fc7) driver.
Here are xorg config and log.

My solution

I have FC7 on my machine with compiz running. I couldn't log out, shut down, or turn off the effects without the system hanging. I fixed it by downgrading my nvidia driver to the 9xxx version.

Might not work for everybody, but it did for me. Hope that helps.

Unable to make Beryl or Compiz work on Fedora 7

Using AGP8x BFGNvidia 6800GT
Asus P5B
Intel LGA775 P4 3Ghz
3Gigs DDR400
ViewSonic 22'' G220fb
Resolution: 1280x960 @85Hz

Nvidia Driver 100.14.11

I admit I'm new to Fedora, been looking into forums to assist me with all my issues. So far so good. Thanks to the community.

But now I'm stuck. Compiz is installed by default, Unable to start error. Install Beryl, then I got the famous white screen of death with only my mouse cursor. Removed Beryl and Compiz.

I thought it was Nvidia driver related. Then was finaly able to remove X windows on start up. Thanks to you all again

Install the NV drivers above. Re install Compiz No luck, still does not want to enable.
Re install Beril, Good now no more white screen. It's start, I see the diamand in the systray (if you could call that in linux) Anyhow, I'm able to view the settings and such, I even receive warning of updates available. Install updates. Still have access to the menu. But seems it does not want to enable, Even the Beril them manager, seems not working, able to view config. But some reason, seems not to wan't to take effect.

I'm lost, your assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
