Red face Acer Aspire 3000 screen goes black

Hello all -- I have successfully installed Fedora Core 9 on my Acer Aspire 3000 Laptop. It installed fine. When I reboot the PC, Grub comes up, then selects the linux partition to boot too. Then after a minute it will go completely black so I can't see anything.
I do know though that it brings you to the user login screen where you type in the user name and password and then I hear the music (which tells you it loaded to the desktop). (again, I can't see anything due to the screen being black).

I did manage to get into the selective startup by hitting "I" during the linux boot and logged in as root one time (just kept saying N to start every service).... and the screen didn't go black doing that. How do I fix this issue?

I love the look of the new distribution =)

(I've moved this to Installation, even though Laptop was a good choice. Since this is a serious installation problem, let's have the most people possible look at it.)

I have black screen problem too. I am using a desktop PC, not a laptop with ATI x1650pro AGP card (DVI connection to Samsung 931BW) and neither installed fedora from dvd nor live cd work fine. I get black screen (and monitor power light blinking) when system tries to launch graphical boot or X server. Changing driver from radeon to vesa in /etc/X11/xorg.conf didn't help.

I have done the same on an aspire 5000, it worked great for a few boots, then an update, and I have the same problem. Now if I leave it for a few mins at the black screen, then hit ctrl+alt+backspace it goes to the login screen, I log in and all is good. I much preferred it to boot to login screen without the multi minute black screen wait. If anyone knows how to fix this, please help.
Thanks.

OK.. I was reading around a bit, and found that if you remove the text "RHGB" from your "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file command line, it goes straight to the login screen, and works well so far. Now... If I logout and try to log in as another user, I get the same black screen again, but if I wait and hit "ctrl+alt+backspace" it goes to the login screen again.
I don't get it, I haven't used Linux since RH 6, but have forgotten lots.
