Dell 1908FPb monitor -- how to get digital connection to work?

I just got a spiffy new flat panel monitor, but the digital connection doesn't seem to be working. Is this a "Linux problem"? Or is it a stupid user who doesn't know how to configure problem?

I have a nvidia card which does include the digital plug thingy, and I have the proprietary nvidia driver installed. Right now, I have both connections plugged in, as I'm trying to use nvidia-settings to get it working. Under "X Server Configuration," I tried setting the one ending in "CTR" (analog) to "disabled", and then setting the one ending in "DFP" to "Separate X screen," then restarting the x server. But the monitor just goes into power save mode.

Any suggestions?
