Black screen with blinking cursor after update March 4th

Hi,

I had a running system with NVIDIA GLX Module 180.29 and all worked fine with Dual monitor etc. System was running for about 2 weeks. After installing all the auto updates last nigth I booted my system this morning and got the black screen with the blinking cursor.

I see a couple of issues about this but most of them are at installation.

The error I see in the log of Xorg is that it is not able to load module "type1" Module does not exist. Then at the end of the log I see Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!
*** Aborting ***

I am running Fedora 10 64-bit.

Any thought,

Ray

try putting the vesa driver in your xorg.conf and see if it will come up with and init 5 ?

Best of Luck,

blinking screen

I know I might sound daft here but if you installed the Nvidia
driver by using the stuff you get from Nvidia ( rather than someones
repo ) it will always blow up if the update changes the kernel

If so, just Ctrl Alt F'something' to get a terminal, login in and re run
the Nvidia installer

Solved it

Yes I was still playin around and I run the NVIDIA installer again and it all worked. Strange thing is that I start my VMWARE player and it had to compile the modules again as well. Very strange after installing the auto updates..

Well I got something back again. PPffff

Maybe you had a kernel update? That would explain the need for new Nvidia and VMware modules.

Ok could be. I do not know if the NVIDIA install does build complete new Kernel or that it patches the the NVIDIA stuff into it. Let me see how I can figure out if I have a new kernel or something.... I also had to compile he VMWARE modules.. funny

I believe the nVidia driver only builds the kernel module. If you have the nVidia installer from the nVidia website, do ctrl-alt-f2, login as root, telinit 3, run the installer, telinit 5, you should have X back.
