Hi,
I'm a new and happy user of Fedora but I have been running into a few problems with it and I would be curious to understand why.
If I may digress just a little bit before coming to my problem.
I don't know much linux in general so if you want to give me any hints, please be really specific. For example I tried to go through the rescue procedure as indicated on the FAQ and I still don't quite understand what this
Quote:
Once you have booted using one of the described methods, add the keyword rescue as a kernel parameter. For example, for an x86 system, type the following command at the installation boot prompt:
linux rescue

is supposed to mean. Like I have no idea what and where exactly is the installation boot (I have sort of an idea but I never got into rescue mode from my usb live install) prompt and when in the sentence it is first indicated to add "rescue" and then below to add "linux rescue". Most likely all of this is obvious to anyone who as the smallest knowledge of linux but not to me.
So here is my story, I wanted to dual boot fedora with windows 7 as the latter was giving me trouble and I have always been curious to try an easy distro of linux considering I'm not playing much and I'm using an acer aspire 1410 anyway.
First install screwed my windows but that was most probably my fault as my disk was not partitioned and I failed to understand the instructions regarding the fedora install.
No matter, after formatting the install of Fedora went smoothly and I use a DVD with the fedora 15 iso for that.
Once Fedora was installed I tried to update it and my first contact with Fedora was that if I tried to install all updates at once it will not work. For some reason it could not install Fedora rawhide release notes and just because of this all the update process was stopped. Well I manage to go through that by installing all the updates by pack of 50 or more and in the end I could even install the faulty update by un-boxing something the thing that did not want to install itself. I find it stupid that even if one update cannot be installed all the others could not be installed but there must be a good reason I'm missing.
So I don't know if it is supposed to work that way, I had to reinstall Fedora later but I used a liveboot install from an usb key and this time around there were even more updates that refused to install themselves at first but could be installed in the end when I went by pack of 50.
So Fedora worked well for a time but I think almost right for the start it would boot, go through the filling of the "white egg" and then just get stuck there 1 out of 2 times and I would have to shutdown my computer and turn it again and just by magic I will be able to reach the login screen.
One day the gnome display stop to work and I was in simple mode or whatever, then I think the bootsequence was not working at all anymore and I had to type fdsck (I think) to have it repaired which sort of did the trick until some point when I think it just refused to boot anymore (I don't remember very well).
So I reinstalled everything using an image from a usb key and again it worked fine at first but quite quickly (I don't think right from the start), I will be stuck on a command line with something like sh can't access tty job control turn off , but if I were to type exit then the boot sequence will just start again and complete itself and I will reach the login screen.
I don't have any logs of anything and I'm sorry if it is too vague for you to understand what could have been the problem.
So yesterday I think my shell start freezing or whatever but I could login in the morning and shutdown my computer but as i tried to restart Fedora in the evening I got the message that filsystem could not be mounted . I tried to rescue my install using my dvd (as I could not do it with my usb key) but all I got was a message saying I had no linux installed.
So I reinstalled everything once again, went again through the pain of selecting individually updates because I cannot just do update all and now I wonder if it is bond to happen to me again and what exactly is the problem I'm facing.
Is it an hardware problem like my memory of hard drive failing, or is it my install getting corrupted because of some bad updates or something I mess with that I'm not aware of. From all I can tell, it does not seem that my problems occur because I install anything in particular or update anything. It seems to just screw itself for no reason.
I'll be happy with any hints or explanation and I apologize for not providing logs or giving more details.
