One thing that can cause that is burning the iso file to the disk instead of the image it contained. Anyway, it happens all the time. Browse the DVD with Windows Explorer and see what it contains.

Then I guess that leaves verifying the hash of the downloaded iso file. If that is good, and if the burning software verified the data after burning, then consider the optical quality of the disk or the ability of the optical drive to read it (even if it's the same drive that just burned it).

Re: Fedora 16 Install DVD Won't boot!
Stoat's suggestions are good. Another possibility is that you're running into some difficulties because of the type of firmware on your computer. Older computers used the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) for booting, but many newer computers use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), which boots in a fundamentally different way. Fedora's installation media are supposed to boot with UEFI, but reports I've seen suggest that UEFI booting still has some kinks to work through, so if your system is set to boot only via UEFI, it's conceivable that there's some system-specific quirk you'll need to overcome. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific suggestions of things to try, except to check your firmware type. Your firmware's boot setup screens may include references to "EFI" or "UEFI" boot modes, or to "legacy" (BIOS) boot modes. If you see such references, or if your manual mentions EFI or UEFI, it might be worth looking into this some more.

Re: Fedora 16 Install DVD Won't boot!
I have not used your burning software but check the interface to see if there is a checkbox for making the result bootable. I have had that issue in the past. If the disk and image verify it could be this.
You could also try making a bootable thumb drive rather than landfilling another DVD. The thumbdirive and bios must support this. If you have efi then it probably does.
Let us know how it works out.

That's up to you, but I wouldn't. Not just to install Fedora 16. Try booting the Live CD version. Who knows, maybe it will boot and load up. If it does, then install from that to the hard drive. Add other things you want with yum. If that doesn't work, then I would try some other distros. I can't be sure, of course, but I would think something out there will install and run just fine on six-year-old equipment. Try Arch Linux if you are comfortable building up from a minimal system. Or, try Debian or Ubuntu for full-fledged systems direct from a CD or DVD. Many many others.

Re: Fedora 16 Install DVD Won't boot!
Hello masoumvand,
I can't comment on the burning of the fedora 16 iso disk, but some other solutions to failure to boot the fedora 16 installation disk are made in the thread:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=273256
The best solution involves using a bootdisk: Fedora-16-i386-netinst.iso ... it's all in the thread. Ben.

You can install anything else you need from the online repos with yum (the best idea). Or, if you have an otherwise good DVD that just doesn't boot with your hardware (rare but not unheard of), then you probably still can install packages from that DVD after installing Fedora from the Live CD (the DVD packages will be outdated by now).

Re: Fedora 16 Install DVD Won't boot!
Ok... I read everything on this page and it did not help me at all.
I can not install the program [apparently] because I can not connect to the internet.
Catch 22: can't install operating system without wireless internet driver to access internet: can't install wireless internet drive into operating system without operating system installed.
NO cabled LAN available: no LAN cable.

Tried installing both the DVD version and the desktop live version, [DL version first but it didn't even try to install at that time, just ran on top] perhaps I should somehow rid the machine of the DVD version and try somehow to figure out how to install the DL version?
Hoping for a clue... Desperately want to get away from Microsoft if at all possible...

According to the Installation Guide, if you boot the live version and click "Activities", then the "Install to Hard Drive" icon appears on the desktop.
