Linpus distro

Please refer to distrowatch article

it says that linpus is based on fedora. i visited the site and looking to a windows installer, tried it. windows installer downloads some 386 MB.

after installation in virtualbox (alongwith windows7 virtualmachine- dualbooting), i observed that distro is very bare-bone. i have enclosed a screenshot & also list of installed packages.

few points.
1. why showing meego repository
2. it appears that grub-legacy being used
3. though distrowatch mentions it being based on fedora, but there is no such mention on linpus website.
4. there are some mix packages from fc15/fc16
5. i m delighted at first seeing a wobi type installer for fedora. I will not say that i am completely disappointed. For someone looking to start from a very minimal fedora, this is a good try.

i have not seen any thread for this, so i strated this one to ask whether anybody tried this

Re: linpus

Well.....back when netbooks were first coming out, the Acer Aspire One used it. I felt it was a somewhat crippled version of Fedora and wound up taking it off and replacing it with Fedora. It had several things I didn't like--at the time (and it may have changed of course), it seemed to be aimed at people who weren't experienced with Linux, but it struck me, (and many others) as, like some of the other netbook customized Linux installs, as something that rather than being useful for newcomers would aggravate both newcomer and experienced user.

Again, this was a few years ago, and they may have improved it since. It was originally designed in conjunction, I think, with the Acer folks as an easy to use Linux for netbooks, but many Aspire One users, including myself, felt that it didn't do a good job. At that time, it was based upon Fedora 8--one example that I remember is that loading the module for the wireless card was tied into the xinit scripts somewhere.

Re: linpus

Hi,

I actually work for Linpus so i hope i can clarify a few things here.

My apologies if it appears bareboned, it is not in fact. Inside the liveupdate functions besides applications you have a section called UI enhancements. Inside here you can upgrade the whole UI to Gnome 3 plus a number of enhancements from us for things like the dock and notifications.

This is actually explained in the website but, again, my apologies if this is not clear. We were trying to do something a little different and provide as flexible and customizable a system as possible. We are of course interested in all opinions on the usefulness of this.

I am not displeased that it is so bare-bone. In fact i am happy that i can add whatever i choose.

I have seen live-update and have also seen various packages that i can download/add.

After creating this thread, i observed that there are already old threads discussing linpus.

as you are connected with linpus, may i ask when there is no difference in installed packages either in windows installation (386MB) & or in dvd download/installation ( 861MB), why difference in size? Is it due to different style of install? I mean direct install require so much extra ?

Pl forgive me if i am not clear?

further whether gnome-3-shell is available & will work in linpus?

hy, smr54, i have learned from reading comments of few learned active people and you are one of them.

I think there may be some trueness to this statement till date. In virtualbox (dualboot windows7 & linpus installed via windows installer), in linpus, network stopped working without any indication. (It may be due to virtualbox/my network problem.) I simply reinstalled & it started working again.

i read past comments. Now the distro is different. If linpus people can add such wubi type windows installer, why in fedora it is not there? Policy decision?

Will such installtion not increase popularity of fedora or fedora people fear increased popularity?

Re: linpus

Firstly, thank you warrencoles, for posting--wish you'd been around during my aspire one days. I'd have given a piece of mind (maybe not, I don't have much to spare).

Seriously, as I said, I haven't used it since the early netbook days, so an employee currently there and posting on these forums will probably be quite helpful to many people.

At kkshethin, thank you for your very kind words. I'm not a Fedora developer or policy maker. They make a live CD which can give an example of what Fedora can do without installation.

I think that any distribution has limited resources, and perhaps the Fedora folks don't feel it's as important to make a wubi like installer. The Linpus folk have their own target (not being familiar with Linpus anymore, I don't know much about it, but a guess is that they are aiming more strongly at the Windows user who might want to switch, whereas Fedora doesn't target that group as strongly.

DISCLAIMER!!!! ALL of the above is guessing on my part--I have no insight into either the Fedora or Linpus developers.
