Exclamation Problem with 256MB USB Stick

Hey folks,

I've allready seen a couple threads about USB sticks, but haven't found an answer yet.

This is the situation:
When i plugg my usb stick in, gnome 2.6 adds an item called "flash" in the "Computer" screen, but when i double click it gnome gives me an error saying it can't read the superblock of the device. I have attached a screenie of this situation (it's dutch).

The WEIRD thing is that mounting it manually DOES work. The problem that arises when mounted manually is that i don't have rights to write it. I created 2 directories on a XP machiene which i perfectly see in FC2, but i can't write anything to the device because it's the property of root. I tried to mount it as a normal user but that's not possible.

Does anybody have a solution for these problems??
I'd be very thankful!

In order to write to it as another user besides root you need to apply a umask. So your mount statement should be something like

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/<mntpoint> -0 umask=000

or the better option is to add this to your /etc/fstab:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/<mntpoint> vfat user,iocharset=utf8,umask=0,sync,quiet,exec,codepa ge=866,noauto 0 0

thanks, didn't know that. That solved the issue about not being able to use the stick properly as a non-root user.

Now the only thing is that gnome is not able to mount the stick normally when i plug it in. I still have to do it manually. I have red a lot of posts from people who all do it manually but i kinda expect from my system to mount it automatically. I don't want my dad to laugh at me because i have to enter a terminal before i'm able to use my stick.

256 usb stick

If you added the proper line in your fstab all you have to do is go to system tools and select disk management , it will be listed there, at least it is on my linux box.

You can mount it with a click of the mouse.

if you put it that way, i can allready mount it with the push of a button (enter) after having done certain pre-actions. But that's exactly what i DON'T want to. I just want it to be mounted when i plug the stick in my PC. It allready appears in the "Computer" window, but I can't acces it for the reason mentioned in the top post.
