Question User has lost X ability

I am trying to install Oracle 10g database 10.1.0.3 on Fedora Core 2 and have encountered an X problem for my 'oracle' user.

When I try to log in to GNOME (or Default System Session) the screen stays blue and I can't see or do anything except to ctrl-alt-backspace to logout. If I log in with the same user to a KDE session X windows works.

To install Oracle 10g I have been following these instructions: http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/...nOnFedora2.php

I noticed the problem when I had reached the part where it says:

Log into the oracle user. If you are using X emulation then set the DISPLAY environmental variable:

DISPLAY=<machine-name>:0.0; export DISPLAY

and then shut down the machine because it was definitely time to go to bed.

Since then, when I try to log in as the 'oracle' user I experience the problem described at the top of the page. I have logged in as root, opened a terminal and su'ed to the oracle user and find that if I try to open fthe files I edited using emacs, I get the following errors:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use "-d".
Also use the 'xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit connections from your machine.

Can anybody see why this is happening? I need the X windows working as Oracle will only install using a GUI.

Well , What I would do is rename the current .gnome*** files of user oracle. Maby somthing has been corrupt there. Do that as root. The files needed will come back after logging in and starting gnome and applications....
Log out, log in as oracle! Its not a good idea to work as root.
You can run the last script of the installaton of oracle, as root.
And the message "Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server" means somthing like you should do xhost + from the user , using the display, where you want your windows on. So better logon as oracle, try first something like "xterm".
If thats working... other windows should apear too.
