vlc media display

i have tried all forms of video avi , iso,and dvd and when i switch form a window to full screen the video disappears when i click the screen to make it a window again i can see the video flash for a second but then the video is lost totally

the sound is fine and so is the controls like play and pause and such

is it my video drivers ? or the monitor? how can i tell what's happening?
