Enabling Swap Space Hang on Boot

I have been looking everywhere for a fix for my problem.

I installed FC2 and everything works great. After upgrading the kernel using yum my system stops when it is trying to enable swap space. I have upgraded the kernel to each of the newer ones thinking they would fix the problem.

    The only one that boots properly is;
    2.6.5-1.358

These ones dont work for me.
    2.6.6-1.435
    2.6.6-1.435.2.3
    2.6.7-1.494.2.2

Is it a problem with my swap space? Do I need to fix it some how?

I have never run into this problem before.

I found a similar problem being discussed in another forum...this was the answer given: (I am not on my linux box right now and don't know where this conf entry is or if it done during a kernel compile?)

    Dear all,
i've being searchin too , high and low for the answer as we all are, gues it's juz part of my responsiblity to share the best solutions around in this open source community..

saw this around.. and it works for fedora core 2 default and kernel 2.6.6-1.435.2.3

    solution: (credits to Michael Schneider)

5.17 System hangs on booting a swsusp kernel (2.6)

If CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is enabled, you may get a hang on boot just after:

Software Suspend 2.0.0.10: Swap space signature found.
Software Suspend 2.0.0.10: Checking for image...
Software Suspend 2.0.0.10: This is normal swap space.
    Software Suspend 2.0.0.10: kswsuspd starting

Disabling CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE appears to resolve the issue.

This might work, I am about to try it myself due to the same problem:
    __________-
Don't know what the issue might be that caused this. In order to get going you
can modify the /etc/fstab on the computer to comment out the swap entries.
This should let you boot without enabling swap. Then you can do some testing
to see why there is a problem enabling swap and recover any data.

To edit the /etc/fstab file, boot from rescue mode of CD1 and mount the drive.
Or you could modify the boot line, adding "init=/bin/sh" which will get you to
a command prompt without mounting swap devices. (you may have to do
"mount / -oremount,rw" to make the filesystem writable before editing
    the /etc/fstab)

    Good Luck,

Thumbs up Maybe a solution that worked for me

Hello, I had exactly the same problem bootting on a mandrake 10 with kernel 2.6.
It used to hang just after "activating swap partitions [OK] "
The solution for me was to install mandrake with kernel 2.4 that is actually provided as an alternative kernel on mandrake installation cd.
When asked "press enter to install or F1 for advanced option", actually press f2 and type alt1 to choose kernel 2.4 instead of default 2.6.
I don't know why this problem occurs, I just found the solution on another forum yesterday.
I just know that it is a problem in the 2.6 kernel.

    I hope this will help...

    What worked for me

I was having the same problem and ended up finding a solution in a newsgroup.

I removed an extra hard drive from the IDE cable, and booted. (Of course you can not remove your main hard drive with your installation on it.) It didn't hang that time I booted, so I shut down, hooked the hard drive back up, and the system booted without problems.

Supposedly this also works by temporarily removing a CD-ROM drive from the IDE cable.

Don't ask me why this worked. I'll let a smart person figure that out.

I had the same problem with FC2. put some echo "blah" in /etc/rc.sysinit, and found that it was completeing. someone suggested unplugging usb devices, so i unplugged my cable modem, and it boot ok. Any ideas why the CM causes a problem?

    Serious Problem

Ok, I didn't want to start a new thread and I found this old thread which might be kinda connected with my problem, I'm kinda linux newbie and I seem to have the same problem - my linux box boots and gets stuck on "Enabling swap space: [OK]"!

I did some research with the rescue disk and this resulted in - I figured out that rc.sysinit is completly parsed and it probably gets stuck somewhere after that - I did some forced filesystem checks - because my system crashed before this error - but nothing seems to help - any ideas? I really don't want to return to Windows!

EDIT: Ok, some more info - I'm using FC2, kernel 2.6.8-1.521, system should be pretty up to date (as of yesterday) - even though there isn't much of the system loaded yet. It doesn't seem to be an actual swap space problem - I mean it also parses the rc.sysinit after the swap space line!

i am running FC5 and hit a similar snag. after some serious reading and two days of fighting it, i found a fix/workaround/whatever you might call it for my situation. the sendmail agent was in conflict with gods know what, and the solution for me was to uninstall sendmail and move to one of the other mail transport agents (i used postfix)
