I'm confused! Let's try this. Create a new repository file.
Code:
vi /etc/yum.repos.d/esslingen.repo
Paste the following into that file and save.
Code:
[Esslingen]
name=Esslingen - $releasever - $basearch - Esslingen Base
baseurl=http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/archive.fedoraproject.org/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
Open the fedora repo file and set enabled=0 (it should currently read enabled=1). Do yum clean all and then yum check-update. If those both work try yum install xfig. I think the Esslingen repository is the same as the archived Fedora repo.

Dunno. I'm out of ideas. Are you using a proxy? Are you having any other trouble with Internet at all?

Try this as you appear to have a DNS issue ( This is one of many problems that you will face using F3, don't even bother asking about multimedia )
Code:
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=http://209.132.176.69/pub/archive/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
#mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
Code:
[leigh@localhost ~]$ host archive.fedoraproject.org
archive.fedoraproject.org is an alias for secondary1.fedoraproject.org.
secondary1.fedoraproject.org has address 209.132.176.69
[leigh@localhost ~]$

Installing an up-to-date release is really the best option, for many reasons, not the least of which is security. Replace the DVD drive or try out a LIVE CD. That way, you can give Fedora 11 or 12 (due to be released Tuesday) a test run without touching your hard disk. If it works well, back up important data and go for the install. You will find it a lot easier to maintain a current release. Look what we've gone through just trying to get yum working properly for your Fedora 3 system. Plus the fact that there will NEVER be any updates for it. All you can do is install packages that are currently available, and even those are outdated. Consider the problems you said you're having with YouTube, Flash, etc. Who wants to deal with that all the time? I'm running pre-release Fedora 12 on my laptop and can do anything I want in terms of actually using the OS save for a few small hiccups.
