Question Resizing Partition

Hello Guys. I have decided that my partition table does not meet my needs Barrymore, and
I want to shrink the "/" partition by 80GB, and then creat another file system on that space.

I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easyest and more secure way to
perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

There are two different concepts you have to keep separate. There are filesystems and ther are partitions.

A first point - you can actually increase the size of certain file systems while they are mounted and in use. ext3 is this way. I think xfs is this way. AFAIK there are NO filesystems which allow you to shrink the filesystem size while mounted. So to shrink the root filesystem you need to boot a CD or DVD or something else. You cannot boot the file system you need to shrink.

THere are some nice GUI tools like gparted available in a live-CD that you might use.

Another VERY important question is whether you are using LVM. If so the problem becomes a but more difficult, but the system-config-lvm system for Fedora may help.
