compress and backup

What is the best way to compress my home directory and then back it up? Thanks.

The best compression Utility i know is RAR. Period.

Then just use one of many backup utilities out there....or go for a RAID if you have HDD and space.

How exactly do I use RAR? Once I get it compressed, I want to burn to DVD.

Quite simple, if you use apt or yum,

Install rar and unrar

then use one archive manager, file roller in gnome and i think it's really called archive manager in KDE.

Just compress in rar format and then burn in DVD with K3B (the only thing i like in KDE
